Bought a 2000 Honda VFR from a guy in Delaware. Flew down and rode it back to Massachusetts (a month ago when it was still warm). The bike needed some work done (it had been lowered so that was first to be remedied). Sometimes, and only sometimes but enough to be a pain in the ass, I stall it when launching in first gear. The clutch seems to be engaging fine but either I've lost too many brain cells which is impacting my ability to ride (which is possible) or something is amiss. I can sense when it is going to happen (there's an odd sound I can't really describe) and if I am quick enough to grab the clutch I can save it. The idle is fine and it doesn't matter if the bike is warm or cold.
Anyway, I'm stuck on the Acela and bored, so I thought I would throw this idea out there for ideas.
I'm not familiar with bikes enough to know if this is the answer, but i'm assuming there should be some vacuum hoses on a bike and this sounds EXACTLY like a vacuum leak to me!
No big deal once moving but from a stand still... yeah, accelerating? Defnitely
I did some searching for your Viffer but i'm not 100% not drunk either so, still..
What I would do is find a manual, or, like me, fuck the manual, and search your bike for vacuum hoses! They're usually black and about as round as a pencil. I think some might go to your fuel pump, start there, should be easy to see. But just make sure all little hoses are connected and no connectors are unhosed!
Otherwise, you may have a uh...wait is there a fuel filter? I don't think we have fuel filters, so perhaps after checking your vacuum hoses, if all are 100% checked, move next to the fuel injectors, they can get clogged sometimes. If all are replaced and still no good, fuel pump would be next to check I assume.
I have a 99VFR and first gear is tall so you slip the clutch a litle to get it going, and yes it is stock gearing. One possibilty is that the side stand switch is not functioning properly and if the side stand switch is not disengaging then when you shift into gear it will kill the engine.
You can also try these websites full of VFR data .
It's likely not a vacuum hose. That usually causes it to race, but not stall. When you first start the bike when cold, do you need to use the choke to keep it running, or is it rich already?
Try posting this up on New England Streetriders
There are a couple of "part time mechanics" on there (meaning they're experienced enough to make some side cash out of their garages and good enough that I'd rather go to them than a dealership). They're also LOCAL and may be able to look at it for you.
Of course it's still an internet forum, no one can diagnose a bike over the internet, but you might be able to get some more insight.
Is that a hydraulic clutch? Either way, I'd start at the clutch cable and work from there. Occam's razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one.
