Possible he's really short so the ceilings look high. Where have you ever seen high ceilings even in expensive places in Manhattan? I've stayed in $1000/night rooms that seemed like I could touch the ceiling if I put my hair in a mohawk.

The light switches are the dingy beige ones straight out the 80s. Tile not much better. Balsa wood door. No fancy moulding around mirror. No embroidered towels along the walls.
