Default Why is "Crashing for no reason" OK

How come, If you hit a deer or poodle (LOL not really but IM beating you guys to it) - you are a horrible rider....

I have noticed in alot of threads, that when people crash on a curve or gravel, with no REAL explanation it is somehow chalked up to "nobody's fault".

"I dont know what happened"

"all of the sudden I was sliding"

"The front washed out"

MY FAVORITE: "Must have been something in the road"

"Bike just went out from under me"

"Curve needs repair"

"Heard Other riders have gone down here too"

Not trying to diss anyone but it is kind of a curious thing to me. If you hit something that is moving, you seem to get ragged on, but if you run into a stationary danger, or just completely lose the bike , it is ok?

Or maybe it is just me.

Bored and wanted to post up something new, besides the same threads we have been regurgitating all day.

EDIT: All the people who ragged on me may be glad that through my accident - I have learned this:

I could have avoided it - if i was scanning more - MAYBE i could have seen it coming..- but the problem was that I swerved hard and STILL Hit my favorite dog. I guess an attempt is better than a straight out fall over.

Either way, I dont think the Post accident me would have the same accident again.....so I take some blame

well its simple, usually when a rider goes down for the first time his ego is bruised and is in denial about his riding ability. doesnt just happen with ride. could be driving too. but sometimes shit does happen.

Because not too many people want to admit they suck at riding or that they got carried away. They want to make it sound like there was actually a reason for it rather than the reason that skills are lacking.

Yep. j/k

I think many new(er) don't really know why they went down unless there was a collision. In most cases a truly alert rider who was not out-riding the road, visibility, traffic, or weather conditions could avoid the get-off. Most don't want to admit it as was said above.

I know exactly why I went down a few years ago. I lost focus, ran a bit wide in a weird turn, and went into some gravel and other crap in the road where cars usually don't clean it off. The front wheel washed, then caught, and before I knew it I was in a 15 mph high-side sailing through the air. Totally my fault and avoidable.

Fortunately the gear I was wearing did its job as did the frame sliders on the bike. I was able to ride the 35 miles home through twisties with a broken shifter. It wasn't clear what happened until I rode back through the same intersection a couple of weeks later.

True - that MF was heavy. 81 LBS! If an 80 lb deer came out nobody woulda cared, but I basically ran into an 80 LB microwave!

in 10-20-30,000 more miles, Id have avoided it definitely. However, not avoiding an accident becuase you arent as good a rider as YOU WILL BE, doenst make you a bad rider, IMO. Someimtes youre just a victim of a few circumstances.

I am under the same name on Youtube and there are some videos of my brother and I in the twisites. Im no Rossi, but not a poser either...I ridessssss

Part of becoming an experienced rider involves the realization that most accidents can be avoided through concentration & skill building.

Another part of becoming an experienced rider involves the realization that no matter how focused or skilled you are, more than likely you'll find yourself sliding down the pavement someday wondering what the f**k just happened.

So true, when I have an "incident" not necessarily a crash I try to examine how I got into that situation in the first place to learn from it. More often than not its due to lack of patients and over confidence life long personality flaws of mine.

But even with all the self examination in the world Shit happens and the risk can never be made zero. Gravel, deer, squarls and the random bolt of lighting will always be a riders enemy.

If you had of started on a ninja 250 you NEVER would have crashed.

I only did because I'm a darkie.

I think "experienced" riders just like to make themselves feel better when they just berate someone who is posting their experiences. Then others try to help. Secretly the angry ones are just mad they crashed and don't have the knickers to post up lol

Default Crashing Hurts

I've had my share of get offs in the 40 some years of riding. Two in the last 4 years, the last when I hit a deer. I still consider them my fault. I could have/should have been more prepared, scanning, slowing for a blind corner, etc. There's a lot of things that contribute to an accident. Most can be avoided by rider experience and reaction. I consider myself to be a good rider, lots of miles under my belt and yet still learning.

For a little humor on the subject check out my webcomic on crashing: K-n-J moto » Archive » Hotsy Totsy

Almost every accident is avoidable or preventable to some extent.

Usually it is the inexperienced riders that deny this.

Most people really don't know why they crashed... Because they don't know enough.

'I hit gravel and crashed.'

TRANSLATION:

'I was too hot in a twistie, freaked, went into the gravel, and used the bike to brake to a stop.'

Deer are hit by good/bad riders alike. However, if a good rider hits a deer, there was zero avoidance in the equation. Noobs hit deer, often, not always, because they fail to chop/brake the moment they see the long legged rat.

Well... I haven't laid it down yet. (yes I know it will happen at some time) I have scared myself pretty good a few times. Every time it happens I know what I did wrong, so I don't understand how people would not know what happened when they actually do go down.
