I rode 1.5 hours one way to a Sonic just to ride for fun......

..........and to get a fried ice cream blast.

but mainly to ride on a perfect summer day.

Why does it matter why people ride, if they are riding responsibly. I bought my first bike because my daily driver got 13mpg. Since then I've bought 2 more bikes, and spend every sunny weekend in the canyons or at the track. Does it make me a lesser rider because I looked at my empty wallet one day and decided that a bike was the answer? Now riding and motorcycles are as much a part of my lifestyle as anything else.

I hate hearing people whine about ONLY getting 40mpg on their sportbikes, but saying that you wouldn't care if it got 2 mpg is a blatant lie. Would I still ride? Hell yeah, but it wouldn't be nearly as much, and I'd be willing to bet a lot of people here would feel the same way. I love driving my 4x4 around town, but it's 15mpg economy keeps it parked for all but a couple thousand miles a year. It's easy to spend an entire day riding for pleasure when it only costs you $20, it's a little tougher when you're paying a dollar for every 4 miles.

Not why I bought it, but getting twice the mileage of a car is nice.

What's funny is everyone dumping their SUV's for smaller cars + a new payment.
A paid off hummer costs less to operate than a new prius and a loan.

I bought my first bike because I wanted a bike. That was when gas was about $1.70 a gallon. I sure rode it more often as the gas prices rose. Getting 70mpg compared to 20mpg sure helps that decision.

I will be the lone dissenter I got a bike because it gets good MPG..and thats also why I got a 250 not a larger one. I wanted to get better MPG on my commute to work. If gas was still $2.50 a gallon id probably not have a bike. Just being honest..now that ive ridden a bit it is fun..but not like im going to be riding cross country or corner carving or anything like that..just going on a ride to have fun for a hour or 2 is cool..but for me its honestly just gas efficient commuter transportation.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I've bought bikes for commuter duty, and other bikes for recreation.

I had an '81 Honda CM200t that I used as a daily rider. It was about the size of a Honda Rebel, and got about 75 mpg. I did absolutely NO sporting or hot rodding. It was for riding to work and back.

My other bikes have been bought simply for recreation. I bought them to ride on nice days and on the weekends. I could give a damn what gas costs, I'm still going to ride.

I have no problem with someone buying a bike to save gas. That's one of the advantages of having a bike in the first place.

Motorcycle USA claimed the 1125R got 36 MPG while beating the hell out of it. My twin gets 40-45 MPG at 70-80 MPH. Twins rule when it comes to mileage.

my zzr is a great for daily rides about 45mpg...i bought it cuz ive wanted a street bike since i was like 9 so im happy with my choice i dont plan on getting rid of it anytime soon...ill prob buy a 1000 and keep my zzr so that way i have a recreation bike and a commut bike...the gas mileage is a HUGE plus with bikes tho but nothing beats being able to take hr rides and it only cost you 10 bucks...

On the highway, my various twins have gotten:

Honda 583cc - 66 MPG
Ducati 996cc - 55 MPG
Yamaha 1670cc - 50 MPG

The reality of D.C. area traffic, however, reduced them to 62, 50, and 40 MPG averages respectively.

Twins just get good mileage.

it's not genius because their main customers would rather park it in front of a bar.

All twins don't get great gas mileage, unless you consider 30mpg good.

Hell I may just buy a Harley myself, if ownership makes you an instant rock star. I always thought it would be cool to play the guitar.

I'd have to grow my hair out and start a coke habit though.

I don't care if they ride for gas mileage or Old Glory or whatever.

I just know that one more rider means one more person who might be more "motorcycle aware" when they are driving their cage.

And that one person might be the one who doesn't run me down while on my bike.
