Why does it matter why people ride, if they are riding responsibly. I bought my first bike because my daily driver got 13mpg. Since then I've bought 2 more bikes, and spend every sunny weekend in the canyons or at the track. Does it make me a lesser rider because I looked at my empty wallet one day and decided that a bike was the answer? Now riding and motorcycles are as much a part of my lifestyle as anything else.
I hate hearing people whine about ONLY getting 40mpg on their sportbikes, but saying that you wouldn't care if it got 2 mpg is a blatant lie. Would I still ride? Hell yeah, but it wouldn't be nearly as much, and I'd be willing to bet a lot of people here would feel the same way. I love driving my 4x4 around town, but it's 15mpg economy keeps it parked for all but a couple thousand miles a year. It's easy to spend an entire day riding for pleasure when it only costs you $20, it's a little tougher when you're paying a dollar for every 4 miles.
I bought my first bike because I wanted a bike. That was when gas was about $1.70 a gallon. I sure rode it more often as the gas prices rose. Getting 70mpg compared to 20mpg sure helps that decision.

I will be the lone dissenter I got a bike because it gets good MPG..and thats also why I got a 250 not a larger one. I wanted to get better MPG on my commute to work. If gas was still $2.50 a gallon id probably not have a bike. Just being honest..now that ive ridden a bit it is fun..but not like im going to be riding cross country or corner carving or anything like that..just going on a ride to have fun for a hour or 2 is cool..but for me its honestly just gas efficient commuter transportation.
I've bought bikes for commuter duty, and other bikes for recreation.
I had an '81 Honda CM200t that I used as a daily rider. It was about the size of a Honda Rebel, and got about 75 mpg. I did absolutely NO sporting or hot rodding. It was for riding to work and back.
My other bikes have been bought simply for recreation. I bought them to ride on nice days and on the weekends. I could give a damn what gas costs, I'm still going to ride.
I have no problem with someone buying a bike to save gas. That's one of the advantages of having a bike in the first place.

my zzr is a great for daily rides about 45mpg...i bought it cuz ive wanted a street bike since i was like 9 so im happy with my choice i dont plan on getting rid of it anytime soon...ill prob buy a 1000 and keep my zzr so that way i have a recreation bike and a commut bike...the gas mileage is a HUGE plus with bikes tho but nothing beats being able to take hr rides and it only cost you 10 bucks...
