Default Corner Entry Speed

I find myself blowing corners and I am not happy with my corner entry speed. I go into the corner and find that basically, once I get into the corner I could have gone much faster.

How do you determine corner entry speed. Ideas. Tips. Perhaps articles you have read that have helped you. Just trying to get faster and more consistent.

Thanks motorcyinghivemind!!!

Balls.

You either got'em or you don't.

.............. Otherwise....... It depends if its a corner you know or don't.
If you don't have much experience with the corner then thats exactly the problem. No one goes as fast as they can the first time through a corner atleast if your trying to keep up right.

Are you talking track here or street? Its all about knowing the corner. I would think most people just use Feel for actual speed as on a track you just know about what speed your going because of gear and RPMs. Then you use your braking marker and feel.

Going to slow into corners you don't know is your sane part of your brain trying to keep its self alive.

I don't know how everyone else does it but When you coming up on the corner I visualize automatically mentally the line through the corner and with that I know what I personally think I can do through the corner(speed wise) and when to brake. So you can figure out which line you want to try and hit and how to get on it.

So what I said in a nutshell is Experience.

There are several books Im sure others will come along and recommend. Twist of the wrist series is one of them.. I forget the others.

It takes practice and judgment. Having said that, be thankful it isn't the other way with entering too hot. This is what track days are for. You repeat the same corners over and over eventually reaching your maximum entry speed. Trying to hit the maximum on the street is asking for trouble even on roads you know well. You just can't tell when there might be a hazard or something spilled just past your sight line.

When I first started, there's a loop around the highway to get to my road, I was doing it at 20.. now i get pissed when a car is in front of me and I can't take the turn above 40. Just practice I suppose. No real tips, I just do what feels comfortable.

I think ray said it best, be happy your not taking it to hot and wanting to slow down.
On the street its best to take your time and not try to be ricky racer.

I dont hit corners nearly as fast as I could, I did when I was younger, now I hit them pretty decent and have my throttle control down enough that by the time I exit I am flat out flyin.

If you find yourself going slower than you like in corners, it's a sign of inexperience. Consider it a blessing. The other sign of inexperience is to find yourself going too fast in a corner.

Proficient riding takes time. Relax.

do you have trust issues? also looking ahead and through the corner helps trick the mind into thinking you're not going fast. plus the other things said are the most important. seat time and do a trackday.

True statment, but you gotta remember, if you have more balls than skill, you may just find yourself in a heap of pooooo.

Buy I do agree with a majority of the rest of your post, as well as what Ray posted. The ability to judge proper entry speed comes only with experience... Period. The safest way to increase your cornerspeed is by setting your speed, gear choice, & body position as early as possible & accelerating through the turn while ALWAYS looking as far through the turn as possible so you can visualize the line you want to take. Doing this at the track is by far the best way to quickly gain the experience you need for proper cornering technique for the street.

There have been a couple of instances when i've been glad that I wasn't going as fast as I could have through a corner. Most recent incident involved a van that spilled a shit ton of transmission fluid on the ground in front of me. My bike was sliding all over the place but it was controllable. Had I been going faster, I would have been on my ass.

Moral is, it's a good idea to go slower than your ability allows on public roads.

I follow the instructors corner entry speed My judgment for braking distance needs work as well. I usually end up over braking if Im not following a faster rider.

I hope you'll ignore the response about balls because it indicates a serious lack of knowledge about how to get around corners quickly. If you think you'll be riding better if you just suck it up and throw the bike into a turn harder than you feel you should, you'll eventually throw it away.

One factor that can help increase entry speed is visual skill.

The closer your eyes are focused, the faster you seem to be going. Look at the pavement 10 feet in front of your front wheel and it seems like you're hauling ass. Move your focus out to 100 yards ahead and it's like you're watching in slow motion. If your eyes linger too long at the beginning of the turn, you'll see the pavement rushing toward you at crazy speed, and you'll keep slowing down even though you can get through the turn at higher speed.

The trick is to get your eyes and brain ahead of the motorcycle. As you approach a turn and spot a good turn-in point, leave that point before you reach it, and move your eyes to the next significant point in the turn, the spot you want to aim for when you steer the bike. This is the visual input you need to judge entry speed. How sharp is the turn? How far can you see through it? How wide is the road? Are there any surface hazards? You can continue to slow as you near turn-in, if that's necessary, or you can maintain steady speed.

As you practice this technique of spotting a turn-in point then moving your eyes to a mid-turn aim point, don't let your balls influence your speed. To master this technique (or any other riding technique, for that matter), you have to be going slowly enough that you have mental bandwidth to execute the unfamiliar routine. It takes conscious thought. As you get better at it, you'll need less brain power applied to the process and will be able to apply more to judging speed. Gradually, you'll get faster. Not because you're throwing caution to the wind but because you've learned the visual skill of judging entry speed.

It's a joke. Common sense agrees.
