Motorcyclist's Legs Amputated by Crash | Today's TMJ4 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin News, Weather, Sports, WTMJ | Local News

GREENFIELD - A 33-year-old Milwaukee man lost both of his legs in a high-speed motorcycle accident Friday night.

Police said the crash happened at 10 p.m. in the 7600 block of West Forest Home Avenue.

Investigators said Julio A. Rivera was westbound on Forest Home at a high rate of speed when he lost control, struck the median and was ejected from the motorcycle. As Rivera flew through the air, his body struck a traffic sign and both of his legs were amputated.

Greenfield paramedics transported Rivera to Froedtert Memorial Hospital in Wauwatosa where he is being treated.

Alcohol does not appear to be involved in the crash, according to investigators.

Rivera did not have a valid motorcycle license.

That really sucks. High speed, no license, lost control, and hit the median. What can we take away from this?

That motorcycling is really fucking dangerous. People with licenses that are driving 55 mph die, too.

Yes motorcycles are dangerous. However, generally speaking if people are taking the time to ride legal they wont be dumb enough to go really fast in downtown Milwauke.

Well the truth is the vast vast majority of us go fast on our bikes. This guy lost control and paid the price. Happens every single solitary day. Before we point a self-righteous finger at this guy, we should look in the mirror...... who knows, maybe he's the next olympian....

Edit: Believe it or not, I've actually thought about this if it happened to me. I would want to be tall, like 6-2"

That would be cool....

Wait, aren't you the guy who got busted and his dad took away is bike for going too fast? Something like 85 MPH on a back road. I would call that illegal riding....

I'm 6'2", with natural legs. I don't think it's very tall; you should aim for 6'4"

If you dont know them, dont give it a second look cause it really doesnt fuckin matter.

My dad is 6.0" so I thought I was good to go... but alas.. I'm a shortie (5-9") so 6-2 would be perfect.

In general I agree. This was a freak, unfortunate, but probably totally avoidable accident.

I just put it up as a reminder of things that could happen. I consider a road sign taking your legs off a freak thing.

Not if you hit them at speed.

Signs are guardrails take off limbs all the time, it's pretty scary really.

Actually, these kinds of traumatic amputations are becoming more rare every year. The most significant reduction came when guardrails got rounded ends. My neighbor, btw, lost a leg to a guardrail in the 70s.

Most bikers die from blunt trauma these days. It's highly likely that this one can be put down to rider inexperience or lack of basic training.

People sensibly driving 55 (or whatever the speed limit is) seldom lose control, fly off the road for no reason, and cut themselves in half. Nice attempt at defending reckless riding though.
