Yes motorcycles are dangerous. However, generally speaking if people are taking the time to ride legal they wont be dumb enough to go really fast in downtown Milwauke.
People sensibly driving 55 (or whatever the speed limit is) seldom lose control, fly off the road for no reason, and cut themselves in half. Nice attempt at defending reckless riding though.
Actually, he is defending the notion that riding the speed limit provides you with some kind of magical shield that makes you impervious to harm. Thinking that an crash can't happen to you because you are following the rules or riding a small bike is idiotic.

Straw man. I never said riding the speed limit makes you invincible. It certainly does reduce risk though. I can say, with virtual certainty, that I personally will never lose control of my bike and cut myself in half due to excessive speed. Something might get me some day, but it won't be my own squidliness, because I generally ride like a grandmother on her way to bingo.

If you go by statistics, being on the road period is really dangerous. If you only took into account riders that that have a license and wear protective gear, I think fatalities would drop like a rock.

So why didn't you invest in a pair of 50CC scooters instead of two of the fastest motorcycles in the world? Seems silly to spend that kind of money to "ride like a grandmother".

Will a 50cc scooter carry me smoothly and comfortably at highway speeds for hundreds of miles on end, while loafing at 3500 rpm? I think not.
Ownership of a powerful motorcycle does not automatically convey the requirement to ride like a blooming idiot, although lots of folks apparently think they do.

but its gets you cut off more by cars than if you were speeding in my experience so far

Maybe, maybe not, but a 400CC scooter will certainly rack up thousands of highway miles without ill effect, as will a hundred other bikes. My SV gets about 10,000 miles a year in touring and can easily hit triple digits with fully loaded bags. I don't think you are required to ride fast bikes fast, but i do think your a fool for paying for fast bikes to ride them slowly. And I think that its pretty lame that you think it makes you better because you barely get your bikes off idle. Plenty of slow bikes out there for grandmas like you.

F&D: You misinterpreted me. Motorcycling is dangerous, statistics say, in comparison with basket-waving. The fact you thought I was defending reckless riding was completely unfounded. You can search my post history and I'm certain you'll find no evidence (unless there was very apparent sarcasm) that I would support reckless driving. I simply stated motorcycling is dangerous, and even guys who have experience and a clear-head on their shoulders get killed. Are they more or as likely to die as a squid? Probably not. Does that statistic mean a damn to your family when you get broad-sided by a drunk driver at a red light? No. I think everyone should be careful and vigilant, but sometimes freak things occur. I stand by my statement that motorcycling is dangerous.
