State Farm won't (re) insure me because of WIFE'S car accident...options?
I'm so pissed off right now.
I had a State Farm policy for my bike down in Texas -- $58/month. I had it for a few months up here in MD, but cancelled it b/c my bike was in storage and I wasn't riding it, plus I needed an MD policy not a TX policy. I planned to just re-insure it once I put it back on the road.
I went to the local State Farm branch today to get it insured, and when they put in my information, it pulled up my WIFE's accident from last year where she totalled her stupid Toyota Echo. They said because of that, they won't insure ME on a god damn MOTORCYCLE?!?! What the hell does a car have to do with a motorcycle, and me have to do with my wife? She's not riding the god damn thing, *I* am riding it. I'm so god damn infuriated right now it's not even funny. They said come back in 2010 and they can insure me (Must be clean for 3 years).
Any way around this? This is horseshit, and makes absolutely no sense.

I find this tough to comprehend...
I have state farm....I was given an option to have a totally seperate policy from my wife, or to have a JOINT policy.
On a joint policy I could understand since you and your wife are one pool of risk together.
But it sounds as if they were not giving you the option to have a separate policy?
I wonder if it is the same dumbasses in that State Farm branch that my parents had in a branch in TN untill they moved to a defferant branch when they moved out to the Farm.
Heck, the girls in the one office claimed the house my parents were having built could not be build for what the builder claimed he could build it for. My parents looked at the girl and said, "It is really none of your business you just need to insure the place". Then because of the price of the home, the girl said well the computer says you will have a wet bar, my mother was like no we don't, nor do the plans call for one. It is the same place when I was staying there (parents were living in Germany at the time) and the washer hose broke in the night and flooded the house, I go in and tell the girl and she goes "We don't insure washer hoses", I looked at her and I kinda yelled back "I'm not in here about a $2 hose I'm in here because the fucking house flooded and I need an agent to come out".
Right, never got the option for a separate policy. All they said was your wife had an accident in a car, we can't insure you. Come back in 2010. I asked if there were any kinds of waivers or ways around it or anything, and she said no. Maybe she's clueless, she had to call someone just to find out if I needed to have another vehicle insured with them. I could try another branch.
If I remember right they can have you waive someone OFF, so that if you let her ride the bike she would not be covered, nor the bike...I remember getting something from State Farm that wanted my parents to sign because they found out I had two tickets and it was basically saying that your son can not use the car (my car, just under my parents name for insurance at the time).
Crisis averted. I retract what I said about Progressive, things must have changed! (They wanted $1600 for 6 months a couple years ago). I guess Progressive's rates went down a shit-ton in the last 2.5 years. I guess maybe because I'm:
- over 26
- married
- homeowner
$696/year full coverage comp & coll $500 ded w/ roadside assistance & $3K gear coverage
(I can lay down the bike and they will cover it)
$424/year comp w/ roadside assistance & $3K gear coverage
(They don't cover it if I lay down the bike)
$183/yr liability only w/ roadside assistance
I took the middle one, to cover hail/theft/vandalism/flood etc.
KBB value is $4,000; NADA value is ~$3,000.
If anyone wants to suggest one of the 3 coverages and a reasoning why I will consider changing. I'm not sure what the best route to go is.
Progressive didn't care at all anything about my wife's driving.
Maybe it differs from state to state, but we've had two motorcycle claims and were on a joint account along with a teenager. They told us that if my son should get a class M license then he will have to be put on our policy with the bikes, but not till then. So, does your wife have a class M license then that would make sense.

progressive had a bad rap going a while back about some of their practices. but it seems they made some changes. I've had less trouble from them than any insurance co I've ever dealt with
Insurance companies are there to make money. If you blow their moneymaking curve, you're a liability to them. The goal of course is to have nobody having accidents but all paying out the ass to insure themselves.
Usually it's not just joint accounts, but your residence that determines rates. If you live at the same address as somebody with a bad record, your premiums go up. It's a hell of a rip.
