State farm is lame as hell, and pulls that kind of BS all the time.
They tried it on me a while back, when i got my first bike and opened up a policy on my car and bike with SF.
A few weeks later, they sent me a letter saying my policy is cancelled because my dad had some tickets (i was living at my dad's during college), even though he was no where on the policy. State farm seems to look up the driving records of everyone living with you.
I had to sign an exclusion waiver that my dad wasnt allowed to drive my car.
Progressive is full of shit too. I had them on my car until last year. at the start, they were cheaper by a tiny bit than anyone else, but EVERY renewal they raised my rates with NO explanation. Every time i called i got some lame runaround that "the rates in that area have been going up". complete BS.
Then they quoted me $1600 a year for my 07 CBR600RR (i'm 30, with a spotless driving record).
So im back with the idiots at state farm as its only 300/yr on my 600RR...

I pay $75 a year for liability only with high limits on the FZ1. On the wifes 599 it is $99 a year full coverage with high limits and low ded. I love CO, in MI it was $380 a year for her bike, and mine was $200...damn No Fault States.

Progressive was terrible for me when I tried switching my policy from my RC51 to my 1098S. They wanted to change my rates from $500 per year to $2200-2400 or so per year. I called Geico and they got me full coverage for the 1098S for $525 per year. And these were all rates with me being married, clean driving record and a homeowner.

+1 - had State Farm from the time I started driving. I moved from WV to TX and they wouldn't pick me up because of a claim we had in WV because of an accident that was not our fault.
Screw State Farm.

I like progressive. My FZ6 was totaled out from an accident that wasnt my fault. They took care of me with the quickness, and didnt even raise my rates. I currently pay $750ish a year with full coverage on the bike, $100 Collision/$250 Comp Ded.

It is the Agent / Agency, not State Farm.
I've had State Farm for 15 years, same agent, never had a single issue with a claim on my cars or my home, have not needed it for my motorcycle, yet. It might help that we have all of our dealership's vehicles insured through this Agent as well.
My ex-Wife also had State Farm, but a different Agent, had all kinds of problems, especially when we transferred her to my policy/Agent. They somehow managed to cancel the insurance on MY car, even though I was never with that Agent.
With my first wife, she had Allstate, they were horrible to work with as well. My grandpa has his insurance through them and has had nothing but trouble with Allstate.

Be Glad that you are not in Michigan with No Fault Insurance! Plus companies are allowed to base rates on a credit score type rating system! You can have a meticulous driving record and not get the A class rating because of having equity lines, credit card open balances etc! Plus they run audits to see how many insurance CLAIMs you have filed in your life! They are all great until you file a claim with them then watch out! With nofault EVEN if you are not at fault your insurance has to pay the claim, you are not liable for the duductable, bu t they still get you in the end! Michigan SUCKS!
