So I'm riding to a photo shoot today on SR436 in Casselberry (for those who know), about to cross the intersection where my friend Andres had a horrific accident when a cager in an SUV turned left directly in front of him.
I stop at the light, thinking about the incident, which happened a bit more than a year ago. I take off from the light with a moderate amount of verve, get the wheel a few inches off the ground and casually accelerate into the distance, of course significantly faster than the cars around me.
Well the woman in the Saturn that was behind me at the light changes lanes behind me, and I hit the next red light. She pulls up to my left and I hear her saying something like "you should be in jail", so I turn and ask "what?" because I wasn't sure I heard what I thought I heard.
At that point she turns up the stereo, and just starts singing along, totally ignoring me, with only her passenger side window open toward me.
So yeah, wtf. Goddamn cagers. You accelerate a little on a bike and they either wish you were dead or in jail.

Well, you did "get the wheel a few inches off the ground" so I assume you drove off pretty quickly. Most cagers just aren't used to seeing that kind of acceleration, and depending on the road and the actual speed you went, it could have been viewed as dangerous and rude to the other cars on the road. There isn't too much out of the ordinary with what she said. Just be glad she only commented on something and wasn't trying to pick a fight. I would hate to get involved with someone with major road rage, because as we all know, in a crash, Car > Bike.
I can see how she might be a bit peeved but there isn't any need to say anything like that
I think it all depends on the situation. I know that I've seen cars open the throttle after waiting at a light on a street with lots of entrances and exits, and always narrowly miss the car that was turning on to the street. And the person turning on to the street wouldn't have had to almost get in a wreck if that one kid just didn't want to play fast and the furious that day.
I guess it's all relative. "You should be in jail" isn't the worst thing that someone's ever said.

Seriously, I don't see how in this country it's tantamount to homicide to accelerate rapidly in a vehicle designed to do so. How does it make any sense that someone could become angered by someone else's relative rate of acceleration? Do we not have enough shit to worry about? I mean I can understand it a little bit if somebody's finally lifting off the throttle at double the speed limit in traffic, but what I did wasn't remotely close.
I also don't see how my "moderate verve" and "casual acceleration" wordings could have been mistaken for some sort of psychotic accelerative rampage. I topped out at about 40mph in a 50mph zone, and coasted about 200 feet to the next stoplight, at which point this woman decided I was criminally liable for using 1/4 of my motorcycle's throttle handle.
People in this country are way too damn puritanical for their own good, especially in the south. Forty years ago it was illegal to sell birth control or marry somebody who wasn't your race. Ironically back then street racing was much more acceptable as a "boys will be boys" scenario, despite cars being far more dangerous back then.
American society is obsessed with having something to fear, and when that antisocial demon isn't obvious enough, somebody in power will tell people what it should be. In this case, anything that accelerates faster than you would is not only bad, but criminally so, and wants to rape and kill your daughter.
