Very cool idea, but what's the point really? The motocross engine is designed for torque and engineered for the MX track, why try and make it work on a road bike? Besides the appeal of a 450cc engine which is a great size I think and the light weight, I just don't get it. Plus, you'd have wicked vibrations no?
Well, Roland knows what he's doing so I'm sure he's worked out all the bugs. He's raced everything pretty much....I think. He use to road race so I'm sure he wouldn't put his name on something that wasn't good.
12k is a lot cheaper than 100k for a superbike or 1 million for a motogp bike. He's trying to create a racing series that anyone can get into and be competitive.
I thought it was a great idea until the price part. So I got a four year old Gixxer to race. I still think it is a great idea, since light weight is more fun than top speed, but the price has to come down to make it work.
Rockwall Honda says they'll prepare you a CBR600RR Supersport for $19,999. I would assume that gives you a decent privateer trim, but not parity with the top bikes.
I think the idea is to bridge the yawning chasm between the factory super sport efforts and the privateers that make up most of the grids.
With a single you get a fairly light motor with a limited amount of hp in a very small light frame and chassis. This will induce close relatively affordable racing. I think the idea is also to develop a feeder series for higher hp bikes. Realistically, this will create a situation where you have one bike and won't have to constantly upgrade your motor or bike every two years or so just to remain competitive. You do the development once and if you build a motor that pops - it is relatively cheap to rebuild or just get a new motor. The lower hp and more attenuated power pulses are also less hard on tires and traction - so the series emphisizes corner speed and technical riding ability. I can go on.
Apparently this is getting significant factory support - which is a good thing. I would personally love it if we saw more small displacement sportbikes in the USA.
