We all know that MSF instructors are god...
Seriously...
If you've been riding 2 years and log over a certain amount of miles a year anyone can be a MSF instructor.
This could be equatted to manufacturers recommended shifting in your bikes manual... It recommends I shift my VFR into 6th gear at 35 mph. 35 MPH!?!!? Of course since the manufacturer designed the bike they should know best...
Their just trying to cover their butts... and since most MSF courses are held at a cycle shop, they can get some cash out of it by selling you a new helmet.
I haven't ever dropped my helmets.... but a 3 foot drop isn't going to structurally impact the foam, it may (doubtful) crack the outside (take a look) in which obviously you should replace.

Sorry, that wasn't aimed at you, just trying to point out that the MSF instructors don't engineer this stuff for a living.

Lol, I wasnt saying the MSF course is 100% right, you asked where the idea came from, thats where I heard it from. Damn yall are quick to jump on somebody.
I personnally feel its not a good idea to drop one for fear of damage to the shell, not the impact foam stuff inside.

I wouldn't buy a new helmet if I dropped mine 3 feet... but I'd be pretty unhappy I did...

if thats all your doing why buy pants at all...wear shorts and go use the extra money to buy some fly nikes...or a hooker
I love my RF1000...its pretty quite and it fits very well...
i dont remember where i saw it but a year or so ago there was a bike magazine that was showing how many G's your noggin would encounter in the event of a fall and some of the high end helmets didnt get great reviews...
but after seeing visors come off in crashes i stick to a tried and true brand name...i got an HJC with the bike i have now and it just dont feel as nice as the Shoei...
lastly...what is your brain worth to you...buy a cheap helmet if you want but i aint gonna wipe your ass in a nursing home cause you skimped on a helmet...

What sparked this topic is that I'm looking to buy my first helmet. I tried on the RF1000 and it fit amazing, but the price is steep, ~400. Since this will be my first helmet for my first bike, I will probably go down, but I may not, never know. So I was debating going with maybe a ~$300 Scorpion/HJC and picking up a Shoei when I get some more experience.
But then the thought comes in, buy it right the first time. Which leans me back towards the Shoei.

There are TONS of hardly used Shoei's out there. The Gmax got a very good rating on the helmet test, looks good, breaths well and even has night safety LEDs in the rear. I was thinking bout getting one as a secondary helmet.
They go for about $125

Just thought of something.
Look guys our heads sweat....some more than others.
Over time that sweat can affect the materials inside your lid as well as make it smell funky. So hay after 4 years, sure why not maybe it's time to get another one.

some people like to buy the best safety gear possible, and lots of people equate quality and safety (often times rightfully so) with a higher price. its the same reason you see Polo shirts, air jordans, mercedes benz's, and MGD (its champagne beer for gods sakes)

400 is too much to pay for a RF1000...you need to show your stealership some websites where they are going for like 299 ish...but it is a great lid...no problems in the first 10,000 miles and the spoiler on the back helps keep your head level at speed...
worth 400 but if you can get it cheaper...

Probably none making those kind of statements
AFAS the shell, polycarbonate is very resiliant.
We made fiberglass cases that were designed for repeated 4 ft drops with 250 lb loads even.
