Isn't this the same state were voters couldn't read a ballot?
it's also the same state that was disqualified during the democratic primary elections for have their voting a week too early this year. all the florida votes did not count for either candidate.
I think you need a motorcyclist council, lobbyist, whatever...sure they arent the magic answer to everything, but they give you a bit of a louder voice, especially when shit like this gets passed.
Lets be serious - 70 in a 40 to get away from clueless cell phone ppl is not increasing your safety.....
Just one possible scenario to consider. If I had time, I could come up with countless more:
A line of cars on a 2-lane road has backed up due to someone up ahead going slower than posted. You're 3-4 cars back, and everyone in the line is driving like morons because they have the patience of a house fly in heat.
You'd like to just chill & maintain an adequate distance to the car ahead of you, but the inbred behind you, distracted with children/radio/cell phone/Big Mac/all-of-the-above is riding your ass. What's the safest course of action?
1) Sit there and wait for the guy behind to lose focus fishing for a pickle slice that fell on the floor and ass-pack you.
2) Slowly pass the line of cars ahead doing the speed limit and pray an oncoming car doesn't appear before you finish doing so.
3) Quickly and decisively pass the cars ahead, throttle down to a reasonable speed, and enjoy having the road to yourself.
I don't know about you, but option 3 is for me. And on a GSXR750, it's not too difficult to hit 30 over passing 2-3 cars decisively. Is it right for me to lose my motorcycle forever, let alone fines & jail time, for choosing this course of action? I don't think so.
Just for reference - until starting my own business - I commuted daily, by motorcycle, for years in Phoenix and beyond. And - riding as I do - not once had an accident with another vehicle (though like all commuters, I had to avoid potential accidents on a daily basis). I also consider myself a very courteous rider... I'm not barreling through traffic, fishing through lanes, or acting up in general. I simply use speed when I must. But when I must... I don't pussy-foot around.

i don't see a problem here. Basically the state wants to see how good your skills are on a bike. I have never ran from the cops a day in my life. Never put it in my mind. But if I lived in FL, with all those flat smooth roads and I know I got tagged 30+ over the speed limit, why the hell am I gonna stop?? Because I might die?? I might get run over doing 40 miles an hour on a normal day minding my own business. I'd run. FTP!!!

the speed was pushed up to +50 and they don't take vehicle till third offence.
Lets face it, if you get caught going more than 120mph on I-4 more than three times you don't need to be riding on the street. Take it to the track.
I thought it was bumped up to over 50 and above as well. But the links provided so far don't indicate that. You wouldn't happen to have a link showing that would you?

Actually, the links don't even prove to me that it is a completely done deal. The link I provided to the actual Florida Senate Bills site says it is still in some committee. But it also says it will be effective 10/2008. So I don't know, I'm not saying either way, but I haven't seen anything truly definative yet.

On March 13, 2008, the Committee on Infrastructure favorably reported the bill with a strike-all amendment, and an amendment to the strike-all amendment. The amendment creates a new s. 316.1926, F.S., which provides that violations of s. 316.2085(2) or (3), F.S., regarding motorcycle operation, or violations of the speeding laws in s. 316.183(2), 316.187, and 316.189, F.S., in excess of 50 miles per hour over the limit, are moving violations punishable as provided in Chapter 318.
The amendment subsequently amends 318.14, F.S., to provided “tiered” penalties for violations of the newly created s. 316.1926, F.S. A first violation is subject to a fine of $1,000; a second violation is subject to a fine of $2,500 and a one-year suspension of the offender’s driver’s license; and a third violation is a third degree felony resulting in forfeiture of the vehicle and license suspension for ten years.
The amendment clarifies that both wheels must be on the ground at all times when operating a motorcycle, but it is not a violation if a wheel loses contact with the ground briefly as a result of the road’s surface or other circumstance beyond the control of the operator.
The amendment to the strike-all amendment removes the phrase “horizontally to the ground” in the statute requiring license tags to be permanently affixed to the motorcycle or moped.
Yea, perfect response to the problem if overcrowding in prisons... start throwing more people in for doing 30 over. This country is going to hell in a hand basket right quick.
There are times when I think about how nice it would be to move to certain places in the USA for cheap real estate, and then I think of the MANY fucked up laws you guys have. That thought vanishes pretty quick.
