Sportbike: Got A Litre?

Default Question about GSXR mileage and switches 49 vs 50 state bikes

Ok so I am thinking of getting another 2003 GSXR 1000 but have a few questions.

It's a 49 state bike and it has 1700 miles on it. We got the odometer to read 7600 so that we could register it here in California. However, now that it is registered we want to roll it back to 2000 where it should be orrrr roll it forward until it gets to 0. However, will it stick at 999,999 or actually go back to 0? I don't know how to roll it back or even if that's possible, but we can roll it forward with no issues.

Also, the handle bar switches concern me. My 2003 (50 state) has no left side hazard switch and does not have the circles on the high-beam switch. I am wondering if this was swapped out because of damage or if it is normal for a 49-state 2003 GSXR 1000. Care to shed some light.

The close up picture shows the circles on the high-beam switch and shows the red hazard switch. The larger, blurry picture shows both hazard switches. My 50 state 2003 GSXR 1000 has the right hazard switch, but not the left or the circles on the high-beam switch.

Just out of curiosity, what is the true mileage? And if you KNOW what the true mileage is, why not just leave it where it is now?

Well the true mileage was 1700 so it's probably about 2000 now and the speedo reads 7600 sooooooo 5000 miles is a lot come re-sale time.

That statement is what has me confused. Does it have to have 7600 miles on the odometer to be registered?
Is it the original odometer on the bike?

The original odometer is on the bike and it reads 7600 miles; however, the "real" mileage on the bike is only 2000

I'm confused, why did you need to add miles for registration?

Don't odometers have an indicator for when a rollback is attempted? Seems like that would hurt your resale more than the extra miles.

CA will not let you register an out of state vehicle unless it has over 7xxx miles. So if you have a vehicle at 1200 miles for example then you can not register it in CA.

There is nothing illegal (that I know of) about rolling an odometer forward, but you are treading on very thin ice posting about rolling one backwards.

Check your local laws about odometer fraud and tampering, and get back to me when you want this thread deleted.

I have an '04 1k and my left side switch gear looks nothing like that. Those grips aren't stock and the bar ends are missing... That left switch gear looks familiar, though. Maybe off a 600 or 750, or some other bike.

That's what I figured because my 03 does not look like it either.

That really doesn't answer the questions though does it?

I haven't bought the bike "yet" and probably won't just because of all the mechanical issues sooooooo I have nothing to worry about. Just curious if it possible to do...
