Get a clear sheild, then ride with sunglasses during the day.

big +1 - plus when it is really hot and you are going around 30 mph you can often raise the shield and still have nice eye protection.

also just an FYI, since you said it is an older helmet,
You may want to look into how old it is.

If it is older than about 6 years, you may want to replace it. I usually ride with a clear shield and a pair of sunglasses, that way I never get caught at night, and keep a yellow pair of glasses under the seat.

Have to agree with the previous posts, all kinds of stuff flying around on the roads, and all it takes is one time to really put a damper on your riding. # weeks for an infection would look like a small price to pay if you lost an eye to flying debris.

+10 I have a smoke shield but seldom use it and it seems that when I do use it, I find myself coming home when it's dark (it's lightly smoked so it's not horrible). Generally though I wear sunglasses and a clear or yellow shield. When at lower speeds, I'll keep the visor flipped up.

Never had an eye infection though.

Eye infections are usually caused by not washing your hands and rubbing your eyes. Pink eye is extremely contaigous and it does not take much to get it. You need to change your bed sheets and pilow cases or it will come back. Same goes for towels and dissinfect anything else you touch after washing hands.

I use a full face helmet with a clear visor & wear Curve-Z riding glasses. I would highly recommend those because they are shatterproof like a visor and they have the foam to keep the wind from drying your eyes out. They have all sorts of colors. I have a set of yellow and jet blue to match my bike . The jet blue ones still look like youre wearing yellow sunglasses which is nice because everything is nice and sharp and at night high beams dont kill you!

My eyes used to hurt a lot, all day long.. I work with comps, ride my bike and drive my convertible..

So I started to wear sun glasses as much as possible.. Since I got them, My eyes have been irritation free. I wear them with my clear shield because somehow shit still got in my eyes with just the smoked shield..

I hate sunglasses but they are worth it for protecting wind and debris from your eyes..

i have had a few rock hits on my shield, the biggest one of them hit right in front of my eye. i would never ride with the shield up.

as to the eye infections, i've never had one... and i tend to ride long distances. maybe it's all the wawter i drink- it flushes them out.
