I just had a close friend almost die because he chose not to wear his helmet to ride his bike in his neighborhood, he wrecked doing about 20mph. He is now in the hospital with severe brain damage.
I can't emphasize enough effin WEAR YOUR LID...it doesn't take much to receive injury from a crash, if you want to have all your skin ripped off your body cause it's too hot to wear your riding jacket, gloves, pants whatever
Don't risk your brain, it can't be replaced.
Although if you aren't wearing a lid I guess you didn't use it in the first place so maybe you'll break even. I am torn up for two reason, one he was a single dad and now he has a three year old girl with a father that will never be able to take care of her again, two because he knew better and it never should have played out this way.
I hate to admit it but I am pissed at him, as well as concerned.
Anyone feel the need to flame this thread can kiss my ass, you are an idiot if you don't wear your lid.
Sadly telling people to wear gear doesnt work. They already know if they are or arent going to wear a helmet or leathers before buying a motor with 2 wheels.
Two guys not riding together, both of whom hit a deer last week, both died from head injuries just north of me in the next county.
On my 1500+ mile trip there where a ton of bikes out on the interstate. Most had the helmet thing going on. A couple of times I'd see guys on their sport bikes going down the interstate with no helmet and with the GF on the back in shorts and no helmet, made my head hurt just to see that.

This is the saddest and most true statement about the helmet issue I have ever read.
People make up their minds on this issue based on no logic at all, refuse to listen to reason, get seduced by the anti-helmet BS propaganda and never look back.
I have always said I was against a helmet law....and then I read something like this and I makes me wonder about where to draw that line. Normally this is a victimless hobby...but try telling that to a three year old girl that now has to grow up with a brain damaged father who will never care for her like she needs.
i ALWAYS wear a helmet. even if im doing wheelies on a little 50 or something. ALWAYS!
if you can drown in a pool of water 2 inches deep, you can crack your head open falling off a bike, even if its standing still.....

his sister just wrote me and asked if I was going to drive out to Chicago to see him...I don't see the point in it right now, he isn't even responsive...I know I should be supportive but it is so hard...I have no idea who is going to take care of his daughter, he had her because the mother was incapable of taking proper care of her, I feel terrible that I am so angry but I know he knew better.
I have lost a friend and a fellow rider and it feels the same as if he passed away.
I have a friend who has never tasted alcohol. He has never smoked. He eats fairly healthy and gets some exercise. He is anal about taking care of things cleaning his truck till I think the paint will come off of it. Someone like this you would think would be a huge gear wearer. WRONG. He went to myrtle last week for bike week and rode all week with no helmet. It drives me nuts. I get on his ass all the time for wearing shorts and tshirts. We have known each other since we were in diapers and I love him dearly. I just can't get him to stop taking these chances.
The sad fact of the matter is that if you ride long enough odds are that you will have an incident at some point. I hope his never comes or if it does it comes at one of the times when he is geared up. Thankfully West Virginia does have a helmet law so he has to wear his helmet when we ride here.
I hope your friend heals well and just as importantly I hope he learned a lesson.

I wear mine everywhere, have a good friend who got a plate in his head for christmas in 1987, visiting his sad ass in the hospital at christmas, with him so down, knowing we were all partying and having a good time was enough for me. Lids for life!
I took a spil in oct 2003 climbing a mountain with my atv in oliver springs tennessee at a place called Windrock, about 3000 feet up on my 3rd trip up thru a closed expert trail I did a backflip and landed on my brand new oneal lid directly on a rock. It was screwed up, but my gord sustained no injury.
I would much rather debate the DOT and SNELL ratings with you, as long as you're wearing something.
so sad.
