ok so i was checking my maintenance schedule for my gsxr 600 k7 and noticed it said to change the oil at 600, 4000,7500, 11000, 14500 miles, but only says to change the oil filter at 600, 11000. Is that some kinda typo or is it really ok to do two more oil changes without changing the filter?
mmm, changing the oil and filter each time is cheap insurance. I wouldn't neglect the filter even though the manual says you can. But thats just me. If it wasn't 'safe' to do it, then it wouldn't be in the manual.
+1^ i had the same question and you'll get various responses from here. ultimately, you figure the people building these things know what there doing. I've personally followed the manual & my bike's running fine after 5 yrs. just my .02$
I change the filter everytime. It might not hurt to leave the filter on for 11,000 miles, but it certainly won't hurt a damn thing to change it everytime.
I change the filter every 2nd oil change.
A used filter actually filters better, the stuff caught in the filter the first time catches even more stuff the second time.
But you don't want to use it too long and it gets really clogged.

Thats fine if its a filter on a fish tank.
Oil filters have bypasses in them that open if the filter becomes clogged. When that happens you have no oil filteration, it just passes though.
Like I said. Change it every time, you cheap, cheap, CHEAP bastards

Then again the farings and bolts have a life too.... Too many unneeded changes and you're screwed. I leave my filter on 1x/3 oil changes: So I go oil/filter, oil/filter, oil/NO filter, oil/filter, oil/filter...
On my cruiser - takes longer for oil to drain than the actual labor.

Guys at the factory know what they are doing. If they say to change it every other oil change, then fine.
I figure since I'm at the store picking up oil, I'll grab a filter too. The fairings are off so it makes it easy to change it every time I do the oil. Plus I can open the old filter up and check to make sure theres no chunks of metal in there. Preventative maintenance may save you money down the road.
Ultimately its your decision how often you feel it needs to be changed.

I'm sure the factory also states 'under ideal riding conditions' and/or a time table.
Natural oil properties break down over time. Most people think only in terms of miles, but don't think of how long it takes to rack up those miles.
The only time to only think in miles is if you're using pure synthetics oils.
As far as the filter goes, my suggestion is to not be cheap if you're doing more than just riding around in residential neighborhoods.
I do every other change. The first oil change (which I try to do between 100 and 200 miles) gets a new filter. The 600 mile oil change also gets a new filter.
Beyond that, I'll change it every other time I change the oil.
If you are changing oil at the recommended intervals and using proper weight synthetics, there really shouldn't be much in the oil to be filtered out. If your bike is seeing severe duty (lots of dusty environments, track days all of the time), then I would do a filter and oil change probably every 1500 miles or so.
However, changing it with every oil change, like bush said, definitely won't hurt anything. Unless you screw up and leave the old gasket behind when you install the new filter. Don't do that.
