I have used the screwdriver method before an it does work BUT:
Use a Phillips Head Screwdriver and hammer it in carefully to keep the hole as round and snug to the screwdriver as possible. If you use a flathead that is bigger than the shaft you have created a slit in the metal instead of a hole and it tears easier.
Once you have the screwdriver tapped through both sides of the filter, give the handle a whack with a small hammer. You are praying you break it free before you start mangling the soft metal of the filter. If you start tearing the filter to shreds you are F'n up.
Go find a wrench that looks like this. It will remove any stuck filter.
I had something like that once...DOESN"T WORK.
FYI for everyone, just put that thing on barely stug. Oil pressure isn't that much, the filter ring will expand, and leaks will not happen until you untighten.
I usually resort to super-sized channel lock pliers in those types of situations.
Be careful as to not knock the bike over with all the hammering and such. Since the oil filter in question has a nut on it you should be able to use a cheater bar or pipe to knock it loose. Again be careful not to dump the bike! Don't be scared of it just get someone to hold the bike and then put some torque on it.

I use the nylon strap wrenches with the metal tube that you put on your socket wrench.
You wind the nylon around the tube until it's tight and then go at it with a rachet.
It is the ONLY tool that works 100% of the time. I've done hundreds of oil changes, and the filter is stuck about 20% of the time due to idiots putting them on too tight.
That thing has NEVER failed me.

I don't know what you were doing but I've used the claw wrench for years and I haven't found one I couldn't get off yet. Maybe you didn't eat your Wheaties that day.

Yeah, i got mine at Rural King, and before that i used my dad's, which is like 20 years old. They are not hard to find.
Similar to this:
The metal strap ones only work about half the time. My dad has one of them, too... It's just not flexible enough to get into the spots you need it to sometimes.

This comes up once or twice a year. OEM filters and a "filter socket" always go on tight and come off easy IF you remember the oil on the gasket.
All you guys advocating hand tight, please read any Suzuki manual. They recommend 2 full turns of the filter after initial gasket contact. There is no way to do that without a filter socket plus the filter comes off easily using the socket as well.
