Default F4 vs F4i Question (A NOOB QUESTION)

Hello everyone,

First off i would like to say i am brand new to sportbikes but not new to FORUMS. I say this because i did use the "SEARCH" function but I couldnt find the answer to my questions. I am looking at purchasing my first sportbike (yes i have read all about starting on a 250 or 500 but i have dirtbike experience and am not starting that small so please that is not what this post is about).

My QUESTION is what is the difference between the Honda F4 and F4i (I understand after 2001 they were all f4i)? I know that the F4i is fuel injected, but what does that really mean? Is there a power difference? Reliability? I just have no idea. So if someone is has some knowledge about this, your imput would be appreciated. The reason i am asking this question, is there have been a few bikes in Southern Cali (F4 & F4i) and i would like to know the difference.

Additionally, the knowledge i lack with motorcycles i make up for with my knowledge of laws in California (I'm a cop). So if you have questions in regards to that i will answer them to the best of my knowledge.

I CANT WAIT TO GET MY FIRST BIKE AND START RIDING. THANK YOU ALL AND BE SAFE!

i reccomend a f4i. once you go fuel injected you wont really wanna go back. it just ran smoother imo

there's a slight hp difference, and the f4 has a banana seat, whereas the early f4i's have the better looking split seat.

other than that, they're mostly the same.

You're a rookie at both. You don't even know what you don't know yet.

Welcome to SBN!
Yuop!

Get the F4i---it'll be worth more when you go to sell it. As to the differences---you'll never be able to tell, except for the pretty plastic parts, and the banana seat. The Fi is supposed to be a little more reliable, and maintainance free, and a coupla more horsepower.

oh yeah.... welcome, and ride safe~!

i've read that the F4i gave up some midrange to the F4, but that could just be rumor. I never saw a dyno chart to back that up. Could very likely be fixed with a Power Commander if it turned out to be true.

properly-tuned carbs will run better than any FI system available today.....operative word being "properly-tuned".

I say to go with the F4i. You will not be dissapointed. I jsut have to say I dont have a problem with you starting on one of those bikes. Just do me a favor and make sure you take the MSF. They will teach you a world of knowlege on how to handle you bike.

the difference as some have mentioned is mostly with fuel. carbeurator vs. fuel injection. there is a difference in plastics, mostly the banana seat compared to the separated seat (the separated seat makes a huge difference looks-wise)

i owned an older cbr (f2) and now an F4i. there really is no difference in performance, the F4i seems a little smoother. there is no choke with the f4i like there was with the older CBRs. there isnt an on/off line for fuel, nor a reserve with the f4i like there was with the F2 (it just shows you on the dash when you hit reserve).

and i would guess the f4i is slightly lighter in weight.

hope this helps! ride safely.

oh, and how do you get out of a ticket?

For a beginner there is no real difference, just that damn banana tail.

01-03 F4i's have the split seat, but 04-06 have the bannana again. That big long seat doesn't look as good, but it sure is comfy!

I agree; banana seats might not look good but they are far better for carrying passengers than the stepped seat.

ohh my poor banana seat, it's such a bitch to get off and get to my little compartment

but I love it nonetheless
