Default New Chain

Quick easy question:

How do you know when it's time to get a new chain and/or sprocket? An older guy I know said something about being able to grab the chain about half way up the back of the sprocket and if I can pull the chain back and it comes off the teeth of the sprocket it's probably getting close to time for a new one. Basically he's saying I should just see how much play is in the chain? Is there any thing you can look for that will tell you that your chain is needing replaced?

Also, what about the same deal for the sprocket? Any signs that show its time for a new sprocket? If I change the chain, should I just go ahead and get a new sprocket too? How often should I have to change these things?

That's a good test for chain slop. If you can see light between the chain and sprocket at the back of the sprocket, the pins and holes are really loose. Tight/stiff links that don't bet better with cleaning/lubing are another way to tell it's time. The chain needing to be tightened near the end of the rear axle adjustment is another.

It's really hard to look at a sprocket and be sure it's not worn. Compare it to a new one and it becomes obvious. It's usually best to change the chain and both sprockets at the same time otherwise the new chain may wear quicker. With good care (cleaning and lubing) a chain/sprocket set should last at least 22-25k miles.

you should have a guide on your swingarm that shows when you should replace a chain.

as for the sprockets.........
