Ducati 999...
I'm going to ask this question of you all, but I know the answer already... I think. I guess I'm just looking for some encouragement to do something stupid.
I have the option to purchase a 2004 Ducati 999 with less than 1500 miles on it for slightly less than 11,000.00. It's box-stock save for a full Termi exhaust system. I do not know if it is an S/R model; I'm guessing it's not. I really don't care.
I have the cash in hand.
I also have a 916 and an RC51, so another sportbike is really not a necessity.
What would you do? Also, in what year was the 999 first introduced? I'm thinking 1999 (this is an important question, by the way... I buy bikes for collector status as much as for riding).
I personally have no love for this bike. If i were you, i'd save a couple thousand more and try to get my hands on a 1098. THAT will be the bike that people desire 20 years from now.

Ok. Why do you need to ask what year the first 999 was introduced if you're buying it as a collector's item? Someone that is interested in these bikes as collector's items should know that the first 999 was 2003. So I am gonna say don't buy it. You're 17 and have 2 nice bikes and looking to drop $11k cash on a bike? Come on, I usually end up defending teenagers looking to drop a bunch of cash on a bike but seriously, there is no need. Is it your parents money? Usually another question I don't even ask but this seems to be a little too unreal. And I know plenty of kids that have a ridiculous amount of their own cash to throw around.
Are you guys sure it was '02? I could have sworn it was '03. Okay, I looked it up and it was introduced in late '02. When did they actually hit dealers and what year were they considered to be? This is chapping my ass...

Jacob Smith might be my "screen name"... hmmm...
I asked about the roll-out year because I want to develop a "trend", if you will, in the bikes that I collect... I own a 1995 916, so I'd like to buy a "debut year + 1" 999... a "debut year +1 1098", a "debut year +1 748", etc. It's not a major factor in what I buy, but it does weigh into the final decision.
By the way, BPMull - I've always enjoyed reading your posts, save for the "I think I have (enter head problem here)" thread. I think you're a pretty smart kid... don't hate me, right? I just wanted to get some facts quick. Thanks for your input -

What a dumb question, you have an RC51 and a 916 and you need encouragement to get another and your 17? Whatever dude

Kevin, I'm right there with you. I've never enjoyed "looking" at the 999. But...
I have a desire to own every Ducati from 1994 (916) to current, including the 748, 996, 998, 749, etc. for a long time (you understand, with your Trumpet obsession, right???). I will own a 1098... it's just a matter of time.

No, I don't hate you. I was just thinking I should try to steer you away from making a bad choice. I mean, if you got 2 nice bikes already why do you need a 3rd at this point in your life? You have years and years and years to develop a collection but you only a few years be to young. I'd say instead of using that money, move out and be free from you parents. But with the "jacob smith might be my screen name... hmmm" comment, maybe you're implying you're famous and have tons of cash to blow. I don't know.

You kind of *sort of* missed my point. I'm not going to spell it out... the mods might ban me...
Suffice it to say that I have sportbikes.net internet bi-polar disorder.
The money is not a factor. I'm not rich, but I've a college degree and money to burn. I'm just looking for a good reason NOT to pull the trigger on this deal. I mean, really... 1,450 miles? The bike is practially brand new...
Someone tell me why I should not buy the bike. Fargin? You just bought a Zerox 999... why should I stray away from this one?
