What a load of crap. I just traded my 883 sporty for a ninja 650 because I found that a cruiser was not my style of bike. That being said:

I *traded* in my sportster for $600 less than I spent on it. I rode a harley for a year on $600. It held its value very well.

I got the sporty for cheaper than what the dealers who had the Kawi vulcan, the honda shadow, and the suzuki boulevards wanted me to pay. I paid less for my harley than I would have for the comparable import cruisers.

Comparing the fit/finish of my Harley to the above named bikes, the Harley was a much more solid (and as a result, heavier) bike than the aboves. However, it performed just fine on all the trips I took with other folks that had similar bikes. It wasn't a dog and kept up easily with everyone I rode with. When I was commuting on it, I had no problems getting away from cars ever, whether I was doing 60 or 80 - it always accelerated quickly away from cars. It was not as fast as my sportbike, obviously - but that wasn't the purpose of the bike, either. It had enough torque to get the front end off the ground in first gear without any issues.

Harley has a standard/sportbike ride they're releasing in the UK this year based off the sporty 1200 engine. If you don't think they're making new things because the market won't let them you're wrong. The UK has a bigger demand for those standard type bikes, and they're getting it. Meanwhile the US got the Nighsters, because it seems the US is obsessed with chopped/bobbed cruisers. If you don't think it is..go look at the numbers.

Why is Harley always called out for not making a sportbike, when sportbike companies aren't called out for not making cruisers? You don't see people bitching that Ducati hasn't made one.

I tried out Harley and found it wasn't right for me. On top of that, a lot of idiots who ride Harleys make me crazy - I hated being associated with them because of what I rode. But that is not HD's fault - it's the idiots who buy them. Just like now, I hate being associated with the idiots who pull wheelies in traffic. Both sides of the fence have their assholes - those who uniformly bash one type of bike over the other for no reason other than what they've heard or been told belong firmly in that catagory.

Because Triumph, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, and Kawasaki do make cruisers. Ducati makes italian exotics, I don't consider them the same category as the Japs. Much like I wouldn't put a Ferrari in the same league as a Honda Accord.

I fail to see why one set of companies who have decided to compete in both markets means Harley should as well.

At least you got rid of it (the sporster and presumably) before the bracket that houses the speedo could crack and fall off

I haven't been on a road trip[ or poker run yet where the Harley guys were putting the smack down on their own bikes for something vibrating loose or cracking or falling off. Most are honest about it, which is still amusing.

Now my friends 883 has been upped to a 1250, he says the vibration is a tad worse on the road. He is looking in to a smaller front sprocket (cog?) to try and lower the RPM and the vibration

I saw a bigger touring type Harley at a light yesterday. Looked like it would shake itself to pieces just idling at the light.

Just the way they are. Wait til you see one with the skinny forks, the entire front wheel shakes and you can see the forks flex, its awesome.

They're rubber mounted now. The vibration is visible in the engine but you don't feel it on the bike.

In over 120k miles my buddy's sportster hasn't shaken itself to pieces so I'd gather its a problem with the particular bikes they've got. ;)

I love that. i'm always on the PCH and I always see two types of cruisers. Guys that just cruise and guys that are after the image. You can tell who is who just by their facial expressions. Usually, the poser village person is easy to identify anyways...brand new HD vest, HD bandana, HD sticker on his Saturn/Honday/Hyundai/bike is very shiny, meaning its ridden on weekends only and he's revs and looks around for approval/attention.

Once I get comfortable with my bike, I plan to power-wheelie my ass away from the each time after looking at them and shaking my head

True...absolutely true...

By the way...a lot of Harley's stuff s assembled in Mexico...so the
"Buy American" thing is dead as well.

BTW...how did HD come to symbolize the U.S.?

Technology wise...the U.S. is ahead of every country in the world...yet some
bike designed and updated...well...kinda updated 3 or 4 times in the last 70
years...doesn't fit....

I don't hate Harley's...and actually like the old school Harley rider...least
for his spirit...if not his riding skill and choice...

This site said it best...

This country was built by individuals, coming together as a group, not by a group who came together pretending to be individuals!
