Go to a DMV/registry office and get them to run the VIN.

How long ago? When I bought my GSXR at the beginning of jan I had to go to a DMV. Carfax says they only do cars and light trucks on the website and running motorcycle VIN's only brings up VIN errors for me. I assumed it was always like this... Its very odd it worked for you.

To the extent this is helpful to you (I posted above) if there is no carfax...

Quote:
It has only 1,798 miles on it to be exact. Which reminds me, just to be safe, is there a way to run the VIN like on carfax? The bike is absolutely mint, i mean not a single scratch anywhere. Tires are perfect, everything. Its like its brand new, and really it just about is being only a year old.

Here's how I handle: I draw up a bill of sale with the usual stuff like seller name and address, buyer name, type of vehicle, model, year, mileage, price and date of transaction. Then I add a line stating that the

"buyer is buying "as is where is" based upon the seller's express warranty that the bike has never been damaged while owned by seller, inlcuding but not limited to any cosmetic or physcal damages, no claim has been or could have been filed under a typical insurance policy with collision and/or comprehensive coverage, regardless of any applicable deductibles and that seller holds free and clear and marketable title wihtout any liens or other encumbrances." They sign htis and I feel pretty cpomfortable. if they won't sign, something may be fishy. Language saved my butt once when I bought a $20K car with cash from a seller. OK maybe it was a combo of the languuge and my "physical presence".... Those who know me would understand. Hope this helps you. Ride safe and enjoy!

carfax has about 50% of bikes registered.

just plug the VIN into the search on the homepage and it will run it for free, it just wont tell you what the descriptions are.

you have to ask A STATE IT WAS TITLED IN, in writing, for a report.

Having been on street bikes for nearly 3 decades I can say that 90% of the time my friends and my own accident dont get reported.

I've run a carfax on a bike before AND IT DID WORK! Maybe it wont work 100% of the time, but in my case it popped up with a salvage title and other info.
