Hey all.
I am sure some of you are familiar with this dude who has put some of his riding videos up on YouTube. He rides a Kaw 650.
Basically I am very keen on wanting to video tape my exploits in DC, to show off the city, talking about riding and all that stuff with my bike. I understand how he has his camera setup, he just throws a digital camera in his helmet.
I have emailed the dude about what kind of camera he is using cause mine will not record at a decent resolution or more than I think 30 seconds. He has 10 minute videos on there and I wanted to know what kind of camera he is using that records this long (on whatever media he is using i dunno).
I am sure the guy has TONNES of email so I am sure my question is burried and not going to be answered by him, so I was going to ask any of you folks if you know of a good digital camera that will record for a good interval at good quality. Or maybe even a different techinique with a camcorder, whatever if you have an idea I want to hear about it.
I am really keen on doing this, so if you have thoughts let me know.
Thanks
-smakawhat

Most of my friends that have done filming have used tank camcorder mounts or I also had some friends that made a bracket to mount in place of the frame slider (obvious risks for this though).

Ah... yeah that's another option... ok.. that being said can anyone recommend a CAMCORDER that would be good for recording? I don't own one or know what I should get any suggestions? Something that could mic my voice in my helmet.
Thanks again.

I found this a few days ago:
http://www.archos.com/products/video...global&lang=en
It connects to the Archos 404 (or a bigger one). It's the easiest setup I have seen on the web so far. Everything else has lots of cables, a battery pack plus a camcorder and so on. This thing only needs the player/recorder plus the headcam. Thats all.
And it has a microphone as well.
I haven't bought it yet so I cannot comment on quality.
But maybe it helps you

Hello guys...I'm "Mordeth13"...I forget why I used a different handle for this forum...but anyway...I answer pretty much all of my YouTube emails, I only get about 10 a day.....I'm not quite the "star" you make me out to be...but thanks anyway!
I've spent the last few days trying to find a better set-up myself. My vids are ok, I love the sound quality of them but the resolution definitely leaves something to be desired.
The best recording format for digital cameras is MPEG4. This uses LESS memory space and has a CLEARER pic. So you can record longer...and better.
I'm having tons of problems though. What I need is a camera that is smallish....box shape....with MPEG, a non-extedable lens, a viewfinder (so I can turn off the LCD while it's in front of my face, and a mic that isn't in front (wind noise).......and a camera like this doesn't exist.
So far the best camera I can find for taping from inside the helmet......is mine. Money isn't much of an issue....I just can't find anything.
Someone suggested I get a portable video storage thingy and use an external lens and mic.....supposedly you can buy something like those ipod things......something that fits in your pocket that will have 10Gigs of memory with no internal lens......and buy that seperate....I'm going to go shopping today...if I find something I'll let you know.
P.S. I just did some internet searching and I came up with this: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SCX105...276742?ie=UTF8
When I get something new...I'll keep you posted. And I'm using the Samsung Digimax 301 right now, btw.

I think I am going to do the camcorder route, but the lens/thingy has to be in my helmet so that I can obviously talk about things that I see.
It would be pointless to yammer away with a stationary camera on my bike while I am looking at something off to the side.
Well mordeth sorry about making a celebrity out of you hope things are going well teaching down there. I know its crazy sometimes, but there are many times in my life right now I wish I was back in Korea teaching again too.
Later all I'll keep you all posted up on my progress.
Cheers
PS - oh yeah thanks for emailing me finally

Ohh, this looks promising.....but I bet I won't be able to find it in Taiwan (even though it's probably made here)....I guess I'll have to order it online.
Only problem is that the camera look a bit long to fit inside the helmet. I saw another external camera that was matchbox shape.....if I could find one like that again.....I'd be set.
Is there even a link to my vids in this thread? There should be since my name's in the title....hehe.
This is one of my more recent ones.....if you like it then you can just click on my pic or my name to find the rest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YImDYWT0jKA

How do you fit a camera "inside" the helmet?

^ Yeah with the bullet cams Ive been looking at also you can buy a mic extention I imagine you could have run into your helmet(just tape it I guess).
The great thing though about just having a camera inside the helmet is you don't have to carry a tank bag around or a backpack. Though I can't see how you got use to riding with it, I put my hand infront of my helmet as big as camera and I don't think I could stand not being able to just look down at my gauges with only moving my eyes. Id hate always having to move my whole head since you can only see over it.
http://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/helmet_cam_accessories.htm mic is only 15 bucks or so..

There was a post on mtbr.com (mountain bike site) about a helmet cam setup. I'll see if I can dig it up. The username was wherewolf

From what I can see on the bigger picture, the microphone is actually integrated in the built-in remote, not in the camera.
So what I thought I could do is mount the mini cam on the (left or right) "bottom" of my helmet pointing forward and putting the remote part just in front of my mouth inside the helmet.
That should give about the same perspective as you'd get from a cam inside the helmet.
And then put the recorder in your jacket. The cable seems to be long enough to do it.
I have attached a pic that roughly shows what I mean.

^ Putting it underneath like that most defiently won't work. Alot of times your tilting your head down and thats allready aiming down somewhat. Id just try to stick it on the side of the helm.

Well, the guy used to use the afformentioned RF concepts camera but then went with a skydiving setup that mounts to the top of the helmet. Not what you're after....

just to give an update, I discovered that helmetcamera.com is actually in nearby Fredericksburg VA, so I drove down there to try out their device.
Pretty neat, however if I ever get around to doing this I am going to go the camcorder with the lipstick route. The issue now, is doing the video editing and transfering the data to my pc.
I am looking into maybe a firewire card and some software, but either way, it's a lot of gear to get but I am still interested. The other problem is riding season around here is going to be ending soon..
anyway hope to get this rolling at some point.
