Motorcyclist critical after accident
Friday, July 07, 2006
The victim of a near-fatal motorcycle wreck was in critical condition late Thursday at an Indianapolis hospital.
Greg Taskey, 23, of Columbus, was in an intensive care unit for brain injuries at Methodist Hospital after an early morning motorcycle wreck Saturday on 25th Street, said his father, Scott Taskey.
“It’s every parent’s nightmare,” Scott Taskey said. “We got that knock on the door that every parent dreads.”
Greg Taskey was driving eastbound on 25th Street and National Road at about 3 a.m. when he struck a curb and overcorrected, witnesses told police.
Taskey’s motorcycle flipped, according to a police report.
He was not wearing a helmet and was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital before being flown to Methodist Hospital.
Taskey has deep damage to both sides of his brain and his left eye is not responsive, his father said.
Pressure in Greg Taskey’s brain subsided Thursday to a point where doctors believe they will not have to remove part of his skull, Scott Taskey said.
However, his condition remains critical.
“They told us it’s going to be a long, long road,” Scott Taskey said.
He said he urged his son to wear a helmet, but “at 23 they do what they want to do.”
Scott Taskey added that he believes motorcycle helmets should be required by law, especially after seeing other motorcycle wreck victims arrive at the hospital while visiting his son.
Cindy Taskey, Greg’s mother, said she was thankful for all the help and prayers their family has received.
“The only thing that’s got him through this is prayer,” Scott Taskey said. “And the grace of God.”

Unfortunately, just as people didn't learn from Rothlisburger's accident and injuries, they won't learn from this guy's either.

Is it really that big an inconvenience to wear a helmet? So none of the 18 year old girls will be able to tell its you looking oh so fucking cool on your bike. Won't look to good if your dead, or if the right side of your face is still laying in the street.
Good luck to anyone that refuses to wear one.

I have yet to hear one single reasonable answer for not wearing a helmet. Some of the excuses are just crazy. I think it's safe to say all the riders that have gone down helmetless wished they had a helmet on...if they are alive to say so. I have yet to hear a rider that has gone down say, "I wish I didn't have that stupid helmet on..."
Unless you're Tom Cruise...Your ugly mugs would be better served covered with a cool helmet and tinted visor anyways...

+1
Most people on the roads at that time are either going to/from work or getting done with a night of bar hopping/clubbing...I'll go with the second one until I hear otherwise.

I think the "helmet" issue is only secondary to "rider education" issue. If better riding education is acquired, these non-helmet wearers will have sense enough to wear one instead for forcing them to.

I'm all for freedom.... "live free or die", but I think helmets should be manditory. Up here in NH its awful. Guys on $60,000 bikes without a $200 helmet.

Someone else on here made that point during the whole Big ben thing. I wouldn't have a problem with making the MSF mandatory.
