Scissors, do you have a like to the stuff you are shoveling? You have a lot of statistics, none of which conform to the Hurt report, as I understand it. If there is important new information to be had, I'd like to get it from the source.

The Hurt report was put together in the late 1970s. Since then motorcycles, traffic, and especially helmets and gear have all changed. Which is why the median pre-fatal-impact speed is now something like 55 MPH instead of ~35 MPH as it was in the Hurt Report.
I listed some of the sources (CODES 2003-2005 and NOPUS). Much of it comes from the DOT report "Motorcycle Helmet Use and Head and Facial Injuries - Crash Outcomes in CODES-Linked Data", which came out in October of 2009. Some of it is common sense (like the fact that if only 10% of unhelmeted riders had head, face, or brain injuries then, by definition, a helmet wasn't needed in the other 90% of wrecks).
Keep in mind reading through the report that some of the informatin takes into account all recorded wrecks over the studied timeframe, and other portions refer only to those who died or were admitted to the hospital (which by definition ignores those who were not injured enough to die or go to the hospital).
The rest is calculated out from these sources.
Keep in mind the following example of the difference between "protects in XX percent of accidents" and "percent effective", as well:
If people without (insert protective device here) die in 5% of their accidents, and people with such a protective device die in 3% of their accidents, then said protective device is 40% effective in preventing death. However, that device only prevents death in 2% of all accidents in which it is worn/used.

This story is why I said wearing helmets should be the law. Fuck ruining other people's lives just because you're "uncomfortable" and/or because you want to practice your individual "free rights"

Yeah, some people gave you a hard time, and maybe shouldn't have. But this is not acceptable behavior; you have proved them to have been right about you.

FTFY.
You don't have the right to make those choices for other people, or to use force against them if they make choices you don't like.
