Default Do I need new break pads? (See pics inside)

Hey guys,

I was doing some needed stuff to my bike and was thinking about changing the brake[duh] pads. I dunno how many miles are on them or how old they are, they came with the bike. They are OEM too. I was thinking of some kevlar brake pads, I heard that they are nice to the rotors and such so let me know what you think. Also, do you guys know what vendor sells aftermarket stuff and OEM stuff? I was going to order some parts, a few OEM and a few aftermarket but can't find a vendor that does both.

Thanks,
Grant

(Sorry for the poor quality pics)

I can't really tell but if you have them off you might as well just change them.

Cant really tell by your pics. They are kind of blurry. I cant tell if the second pic is metal showing or just shiny from your camera.

They look decent from what I can see anyway.

It is spelled "brake" not "break"

Yeah this digital camera sucks I can't get any better pics. And yeah there is metal showing, I think that the pads are metal based pads.

They don't look like they are completely trashed, but since you have them off you might as well replace them.

Ya there still good. Better than the ones on my bike thats for certain

You can still see the slots in them they still got meat on em. Almost all disc pads are sintered meaning compounded with metal in the pad.

Why not just change them? Next time you are taking a pic of them Hold them in your hand so we can see a good side view of them. The one of them laying down on the cloth is close.....but doesn't give a good enough angle to tell for sure

those vertical grooves in the pad surface are your gauge.
If the lines were not visible then the pads are worn beyond the service limit.
the thickness of the pad above the grooves is your safe usable pad thickness.

it looks like there is plenty of pad left but if you have them off and new pads on hand then go ahead and change them.

yea theyre perfectly fine, they fail most states safetly inspection at 2/32 of an inch. A quarter is just about 2/32" bike pads are not that thick to begin with like automotive pads, theyre like 6/32 to begin with. automotive pads are like 13/32"

i run my pads til theyre almost metal to metal.

If they have large cracks in the pads from overheating, replace them. tiny little cracks are ok.

when ya put em back dont forget to put a little lube on the back of the pad (metal side)to stop squealin.. molybendulum grease or antiseize.
