Default Squidly not to wear protective pants when commuting??

Do you guys think it's squidly, and stupid not to wear protective pants when commuting?? I'm a new rider, and just put a lot of money into some gear...jacket, gloves, boots...looking to buy some back armor. However I pretty much overlooked pants. Thinking about it...hitting the ground wearing only jeans could really fuck you up...however wearing leather pants...or even textile pants is a hard pill to swallow if you are commuting. Having to walk into class or work wearing that stuff is not exactly not what I want to do. In fact, this becomes the dillema with boots too...if you wear them, then you either have to bring normal shoes, or wear racing boots all day. So is it squidly not to wear protective pants when commuting?? What do you guys do?

Check out the Sturgis leather overpant. You can take those off and stuff 'em in a backpack. Bottom line, wear gear.

I wear textile overpants to commute, and usually just slip them off when I get somewhere and lock them to my bike with a cable lock, along with my textile jacket (I wouldn't lock my leather jacket and leave it I love it too much). I'll usually wear riding boots around school and deal with it but if there's really a lot of walking to look forward to that day I'll bring a pair of shoes in a backpack. I've gone down in jeans at 10 mph...landed in grass...still got a little rash. Fuck those things.

With all that said, most riders ride in jeans. It's just a personal choice.

I confess- I recently spent $240 on leather pants but I haven't yet worn them to work due to the inconvenience of having to carry my work pants in a backpack and then changing in a restroom before reporting to work. If I were to wreck on the way to work I'm sure I'd regret this laziness very much.

there is no chance of me wearing leather pants for my commute. if i had to put them on and take them off before every class, it would be rediculous. in fact, i wear just helmet/gloves and jeans/sweatshirt when i commute to campus(1mile). and yes, i do little wheelies around campus

Well, I guarantee you, changing bandages and soaking road rash all day is alot more rediculous.

RIDICULOUS you clowns

Anyway... I understand leather pants might be a dilemna for commuting, and nothing we can say will REALLY sway you into wearing them. They might just be too much of a hassle for you.

In that case, find some textile pants that you feel more comfortable walking around in during the day. Atleast you'd be wearing something thats protective.

Squidly? This is squidly when riding in my book:

1. Sandles, slippers, open toe shoes etc.
2. No helmet, even worse: riding with one strapped to the side of the bike and none on your head!
3. No gloves. Your going down, what are you gonna catch yourself with? Your face? See line #2.

Other than these 3 major items, I'm ok with peoples decisions. Don't get me wrong, gear is the right way to go. The more the better.

Realistically though, how many people ride with full gear? I know everyone on this board only ride 600's with full gear and never ride beyond their limits! Ha, now stop bullshitting me!

Full gear = Excellent!
Partial gear = Good!
Minimal gear = Well, you'll heal eventually!
No gear = Dead!

Now go out and ride!!!!!!!

I wear full gear including pants everywhere except going the 5 miles to a local bike night.

I think you received some good advice above. Buy them, wear them and think of a convenient way to be able to wear all your gear.

It's all about risk assessment. Many will say you don't need full gear just to commute, but others will say that's when an accident is more likely.

I wear a full textile suit for most of my riding, but I'll admit I often wear a leather jacket and jeans when I will be walking around somewhere. I wear riding boots about 99 percent of the time and leave a pair of shoes at work just in case.

What's your point? That you’re capable of performing wheelie without any gears and there’s no chance in hell that you’ll ever experience any road rash?

There are so many excuses as to why a rider doesn’t wear any safety gear. What’s even more puzzling to me is why people even go to the trouble of buying that so called “Expensive” gear, if it’s only intended for is to be hanging inside the closet?

NO. And forget what others may think about you wearing your gear.

I have found some pretty cool textile jeans.
Dragon Jeans These things rock!
Looking for a link!!!
Great for casual wear & great protection!
But still not equal to my Alpinestars leather.
As far as the shoes!
Anything leather that ties or comes above the ankle. No Tennis shoes (see most any stunt vid gone wrong) these things won't stay on your feet in a tumble!
