Default R6 front end on the FZ6?

After doing a track day this past weekend, I really want better front forks and brakes on my FZ6. One of my racer friends at the track looked at my FZ6's front end and said: "You know; If the R6 forks are the same diameter up top and close to the same length, you should just be able to slide them into your existing triple clamp setup. Heck, any bike with the right size front forks would probably work....". You know, I think he's right.

I want to keep the FZ6 handlebars and don't want clip-ons or any non-sense like that, but I do want adjustable forks and better brakes, so slipping in the other forks would be a neat solution.

Has anyone measured up the R6 and FZ6 front ends to see if this would be possible? I suppose I'd also have to run a R6 front wheel too, in order to get the brakes lines up correctly, but I don't really know.

Hmmmmm.....

I never really looked into the r6 components, as I was more impressed with the R1 inverts (though the '05 r6 has inverted forks now, too ). I'd venture a guess that an older generation set of R1 or r6 fork tubes would be able to slide in. At any rate, the 03-04 R1 fork housings are a larger diameter and won't bolt into our stock triple clamp. Afterall, I think I'll just racetech the stock ones and buy an '06 R1 (give me time to save my pennies for insurance).

The FZ6 and the R6 share the same wheels, the main challenge is the length and diameter of the forks.
The R6 forks are actually 2mm thinner, which means youneed to find another bike that has 43mm forks or transplant a complete R6 front end including triple trees onto the FZ6.

An interesting project, although I would be inclined to go the Racetech or progressive route before I ventured into that size of engineering project.

The geometry on this bike does not auger well for out and out track racing, therefore, multi adjustments on the forks could be major overkill.

Simply find a spring and oil rate you like and stick with it, cause anyone worth thier salt on a sportsbike is gonna blow your doors off on the track.

If you really want a track bike, I would suggest www.wera.com and pick up a used one for between $1500-$4000, and then you won't be worrying about busting up $1000 worth of plastics and tank.

One good "off" on the FZ6 and you maybe wishing you never took it to the track.

Just my 2 cents.

That's good to know about the wheels. Does that mean that R6 rotors would fit on our wheels? I realize that the calipers might be located differently.

Hmmm. I definitely want to keep the handlebar setup of the FZ6. So you're saying that the FZ6 has 43mm forks, and the R6 has 41mm forks? Is that the upper tube measurement?

(edit)
I did some googling and it appears that at least the foreign R6s have 43mm forks:

A suspension specialist at the track on Sunday told me to just put in bigger springs and thicker oil, since it's just a street bike and will never be a race bike. But, I figure if I can kill two birds with one stone, and get upgraded brakes and front forks at the same time, I'll be good to go.

I think that the FZ6 could do decently on the track, at least the short Pocono East course. There were some supermoto bikes out there on Sunday. I'm not out to race, but just to have fun on the track. Plus, it's fun to pass sportbikes when riding a lesser machine.

I just sold my F4, which I bought mainly as a trackbike, (I still have the race bodywork sitting here) and I'm not really interested in another.

Actually, I have a really different outlook. I use track time to improve my riding skills and I find it best to ride on the track with the bike that I plan to ride on the street. Heck, the FZ6 is tons better on the track than the 93 Katana 750 that I started with.

If I put it down, then I buy new bodywork and get it straightened. Heck, plastic is cheap for this bike.....

I took the fork specs from the Yamaha USA site and used the 2004 model, other years/models may have 43mm forks, I see the 05 R6 now has USD's.

The rotors are very similar, if not identical, on the YZF600R and the FZ6.

For around $150 you maybe able to acheive the setup you are looking for rather than several hundred for a front end graft.
