Default new bike.....

Well a busy week end. Met some friends at my local Honda dealer. Something I try to avoid as I get shiny bike syndrome...

Anyway this was the result of my saturday day out with friends

Good on 'ya mate. The VFR is a natural progression from the Fizzie. Hope she treats you well!

I will be interested to hear your impressions comparing the FZ to the VFR.... I've often thought of the -6 as a 'poor man's VFR'.

Nice bikes, to be sure. How old is this one, what sort of miles/kilometers?

1st Hour on bike...Test ride prior to purchase...

Id test ridden a vfr800 before. It was the dealers demo bike. It was brand new, with 400 miles on it back. Within 15 minutes id took it back. Why ? The muscle between your thumb and first finger was red roar and hurting...So id wrote off having a vfr800.

Anyway I met my mates and spotted this one. I thought id give it another try. The difference was remarkable. Mines got 10,000 mile on it back. Its a 2005 model. A5

It was noticably smoother, like turbine smooth. The gearbox...wow Makes the fazer box look agriculteral in comparison. The bike is heavier and you notice it, particularly when turning the bike round in a 3 point turn and look of steering lock compared to the fazer.

Suspension.. I understand why the r6 conversion is so popular...The vfr is obviously heavier up front but the stretch of road I ride to work has 2 fantastic tight bend...Were fantastic. They were resurfaced with a super grip type stuff. The super grip has broken up in places, so its pretty ruff. The fazer would be kicking its steering and the back end would be bouncing about. The vfr went round, and didnt notice it. What I did notice was you have to muscle the fazer down in comparison to the vfr which drops. The other BIGGY I noticed was I was 20 mph faster round the bend and im not a rider that goes hooning about round bends at stupid speeds. Ive got 2 beautiful kids to consider.

I like the linked brakes. There is very little if any dive under braking. It feels like the bike is just sitting down.

Far more stable....

A lots been said about vtec on the vfr.... I actually like it. The bike is so torquey and when the vtec opens up its like engaging WARP drive. The top end seems to go for ages. The bike doesnt feel like a high power bike, well it isnt...But it is deceptively fast.

I can understand why the bike is marketed as hondas flagship sports tourer... It just oozes quality.

Headlights...Not tried them, it was daylight. I am assured they are very good. Shame fizzer6 doesnt live nearer to convert it to 4 projector headlights though.

Thats my thoughts on my first hour on the bike. The test ride..

Final Thought....

The fz6 is a great bike. Great Bike. Im not going to knock it. Mines took me switzerland, never missed a beat and done it in comfort. Its good at what it does. The vfr is in a different league and it stands out miles. All said and done the fazer is a budget 600. The vfr is not a budget bike.

The vfr is nearly £9000.00 with luggage. The fazer £5500.00 They really are worlds apart. My advice is dont ride the vfr, unless you have got the money to buy one. The difference really is that massive.

Paul

I can't speak for anyone else, but, having come from two litre size BMW sport-touring bikes and then the FZ6, the FZ6 more than holds its own.

I am not knocking the VFR. I would love to have a 92 model in white. I love the color and it has no VTEC.

Too bad it has a 4th cylinder.

The big score: anyone, any sex, over 75 years old has been upped to 100 points.

Enjoy it, i had 2 '04 VFRs. They are good bikes, but i couldn't get over the fuel injection/VTEC issues both of my bikes had. The first bike i bought new with 0 miles, it was wrecked 1.5 months later with 4700 miles on it, no fault of its own. The second i bought used with 5300 miles, sold it about a year later with 19500 miles on it. They are good quality bikes (better than the FZ6, and they better be for the price they are new), fast, and the motor is very smooth (vibration wise). The headlights are fantastic. By far the best headlights i have ever had on a motorcycle (although i was plesently suprised how decent the FZ6 low beam is, as my BMW K1200RS headlight blew). The luggage is great, get it and you'll never take it off, it's just so convenient. The looks are great. Get a staintune exhaust. Expensive, but sounds like sex. Sargent seats for them rock, too. The rear seat cowl will still fit over it.

Issues i had with mine:
1-SURGING- very well known, both of my bikes did it. If i was cruising at a constant speed (on a highway, through town, etc), it would almost feel as though i was slowly letting go of the throttle, the bike/rpms would slowly drop. Give it some more throttle, nothing. Give it a pinch more, nothing, a bit more and whoa, all at once you are back. VERY annoying as it just keeps doing it. Sometimes it'd go all day without doing it, other times every time i rode it it'd do it. Power commander didn't help. They did it with stock exhaust and staintunes. This is the main reason i sold the bike, sorry to say. The fueling on my stock '07 FZ6 is miles ahead of the VFR.

2-VTEC changeover- another well known issue. My first bike was horrible. The change over in 1st and 2nd would bring the front wheel off the ground. They were never smooth. The 2nd bike was sooo much smoother. The first tiem it hit VTEC for the day would be a bit harsh, but the rest were usually much better. You could still feel it, but it was better.

3- Thermostat- Becoming a known issue. They get stuck open. If you ride in cold weather, it's hell. It'll get your gas mileage down into the 20s-low 30s. The VTEC won't kick in until the water is ~150F, with a bad thermostat and moving, you won't see much above 130F on a cold day. If it doesn't maintain at least 165F on the highway, it's bad. It's a bitch to get to (it's below the throttle bodies, in the "V" of the motor), and dealers are too stupid to figure out how to diagnose the issue (both of my bike were still under warranty).

4-Gas mileage- Best i ever got was about 42 mpg, averaged 39-40mpg no matter how i rode. That is even with experimenting with 87 and 93 octane, power commander or no power commander. It runs fine on regular, if you are happy with 40mpg, great. i wasn't. For comparison, i've been getting 47-48mpg regularly on the FZ6. Oh, and yeah, that tank holds 5.8 gallons, too bad the gas light blinky thing comes on with about 1.5-1.6 gallons still left in the tank. Both of my bikes came on at the exact same time, i've been told that's how it is.

5-crappy cooling system- 2 sidemound radiators, 1 fan. the fan should come on at 221-223F, but it's next to worthless when sitting still on a hot day. I'd hit 230-235F sitting in traffic on a hot day before it started splitting lanes. The fan also sucks air from the hole in the left fairing, into the engine area. When moving, the air goes the other way naturally. SO, if the fan comes on, then you take off, no air really gets through the left radiator and the right isn't big enough to do anything, so you are stuck with bike that is only getting warmer, no matter how fast you go down the road. My somewhat of a solution was a 3 position switch for the fan, on, auto, off. On "on" the fan would be on whenever the key was on. If i knew i was going to be stopped for a bit, i'd kick the fan on to help the process. Auto allowed the fan to work as from the factory (on at 221, off ~210). Off was the dangerous one. It allowed me to turn off the fan if it was on. If the fan was on, then i got up to over 50 mph or so, i'd kick it off and the temps would drop like a rock, then kick it back into auto. You just gotta be sure to move the switch back.

If you can get past all of that, enjoy it. They are fun bikes, different, and look great, but i enjoy the FZ6 more than i enjoyed my VFRs. VFRD.com is a great site for a lot of info, i still visit there.

I've also heard they have a pretty pesky electrical gremlin, but I can't remember what the issue was.
