I think about that more for winter use. In the summer, it gets hot, and I would not want anything blocking the air from my hands. My R1100RS had hand guards, and I removed them for summer use.

Have not had much of an issue w/ getting hit in the hands. I wear gloves and tend not to stay behind anyone very long though.

I'm the same way.... staying behind semi trucks, RVs and the like is bad for visibility, and they suck a lot of debris off the ground and stir it into the air. Getting sand blasted with garbage isn't my idea of a good time.

Late spring and early summer are times with much higher debris getting flicked into the air around this part of the NW... the log trucks haul trunks out of the woods, that have been dragged up hill to a landing, stacked on rocky mud, then set into the pair of cradles that support the load during transit. No covers. The trailer wheels have mud flaps, but no fenders.... so stuff gets tossed vertically rather than straight back. Better than getting shot with a chunk of bark or recap; but that stuff still hurts when it falls, bounces and you run into it.

Another couple of weeks and the street sweepers will have picked up the worst of it... right now, it's all the stuff from all winter long, as well as the newer stuff from the current loads.

I don't think I can remember a time when I've been hit in my hands. I wear gloves all the time so I'm sure that keeps me from feeling anything that's small.

Now aren't you glad you have a full fairing? Nothing worse than catching a golf ball sized rock or a bird in the throat at 70 mph!

The OEM screen has ricocheted more stuff into my face and throat area, than I've ever dealt with on an unfaired bike.... lowering the windshield (double bubble) portion has helped reduce that... but it still happens.

Things big enough to do damage, I generally have enough time to turn my head, or lean away from before they hit me...

Often thought about adding hand guards for winter riding just for a bit of protection from the cold.

Never had any issues with being hit by rocks........but bugs, well I'm like a magnet for bugs

It would be stupid to ride without gloves

I ride with gloves, but in all of my short riding experience I've never had anything bigger then a bug hit my hands on my 09. lots of face shots thought. Had a truck throw a rock up and hit my face shield and crack the visor of my helmet on the highway....made it hard to see but I sure as hell wasn't lifting my mask up after that...

I completely agree the '05 OEM screen has a terrible side-effect of funneling bugs in to my face. But I think the OEM screen does a pretty good job of keeping rocks & bugs from hitting my hands. Particularly compared to previous un-faired bikes I've owned. Maybe your Puig double bubble is to blame for the extra hand shrapnel.

Well all i can say is I ride a 2007 and have had no troble with this. In my area roads suck and lots of construction going on. I have a chip in helmet, and couple of scratches on fairing but nothing on hand before. I do notice the points come up a little higher on the 07+ but not sure if thats where it matters.

That's one of the data points I was looking for... not having ridden an >'07, I haven't had a chance to look that over.

To do some more testing i took gloves off to feel more air flow and with hands on bars normal posistion no air movement really... But lift up about 3 to 4 inch and bam hit by air. So i say it would do great.

I took a bat in the upper chest once at night at 60 mph...the bat was traveling at me at an unknown speed but I later learned they can travel at 50 mph! That was painful and impossible to avoid. Good reason to leave your face shield down at night! If it had struck my face I would certainly have went down.
