FZ6If you’re looking for one bike to perform a multitude of missions, look no further.
Take it from Cycle World* Magazine - “For a more advanced rider looking for a bike to do it all, there is no other choice.”
Thanks for the replies everyone. Work has kept me offline (for moto stuff at least) so here we go.
The school was $650 to ride their bikes. I paid $120 for the track day with TrackDaz - totally different org, just planned for it to be at the same track.
mbodell, the spring rate was AWESOME! Well worth the return/exchange and install issues. I still need to take the spacers out to re-machine them (and add washers of course) but it's like night and day difference. I forgot to mention my RaceTech .90kg spring and 10w fork oil replacement! I should probably drop the tubes a bit next.
wavex, have fun man! And seriously, be careful - it's easy to crash or at least run off on that track the first couple sessions out. Take it easy and build up your speed as the day progresses. We still have to hang out.
To everyone else, you should do a trackday if the notion appeals to you. The bike can easily handle the track for those of you weighing up to 200 lbs or so, stock as a rock, as long as you take it easy. In my experience, if you hang off and don't go SUPER fast you can get away without removing the center or side stands, though there are riders here who may have crashed due to a combo of excessive lean angle and aftermarket rearsets which allow for more lean. The only thing I was dragging were the peg feelers, which I promptly removed. That said, if you can get a universal (spool-less) rear stand, it can't hurt to remove both stands for a track day.
The RaceTech springs will improve ANY rider's experience at the track exponentially. I swapped mine out w/o removing the fork legs, only the fork caps. If I hadn't been trying to jam 7+ inches of spacer in (on the 07 model remember) to begin with, I wouldn't have had such a hard time.
The TrackXperience organization also did a free class all day if you were into it - I did it since it was my first time, but I would probably sit through it again. And while many trackday orgs may not have full on organized schools (free or not), almost all of them have control riders who will definitely help you out on the basics if you ask them.
Most of all, take it easy at first, get the tires warmed up, then have fun! I was passing people in the slow group (C is the "slow" group, B is intermediate, A is race-pace - generally there are passing limitations in the C group, like no passing on certain corners and no passing inside). Sessions are 20 minutes apiece usually, though my first one only had 2 groups, and I've heard of places that have full-on, all day open track.
Last tip on track days, don't ride there unless you happen to live close to the track. You'll be glad you don't have to ride home after a long day, and if you crash you still have a ride home.
Trackdays are the proper way to ride your FZ6 aggressively. There are plenty of proper places to ride, and elegant form and brisk pace can be relatively safely and responsibly achieved in certain canyon / twisty settings, but the only place to really ride any bike aggressively is a track. It's WELL worth the money, trust me.
Thanks Mark! cool reviews... I`ll do everything I can to be mellow the first sessions out... actually, I am going to try to be mellow the whole day, but I know myself.......
