sorry about your crash

but on side note, why do all ofou fz6'ers use frame sliders? it seems like i am always reading about your crashes and broken frames due to sliders. sure they will save you from a zero speed tip over, but come on, broken frames? not worth the risk at all. I'm surprised your insurers accept you claims when an after market part is the reason the bike is totaled. i don't have them on my monster because they tend to crack the engine cases if the bike is laid down at speed.

rant over, sorry about the threadjack, sorry about your hand and bike.

On my bike, it doesn't look like I've dragged the center stand yet. I think for the next track day I will probably remove it ... if I could get spools on there, I'd remove the sidestand as well but I think the 07-08 models don't have the hole to screw spools into the swingarm.
I think you've missed the point.

The sidestand touches down before the centerstand. The stock pegs with feelers removed will touch down before the centerstand, but the sidestand will touch down first on the left side if it is not removed.

Lean your bike up against a tree or wall....or simply buy/borrow a rear-stand that does NOT require spools...there are many out there.

Bottom line, don't track the bike with the sidestand...you might as well remove the centerstand while you're at is since it's easy, won't pass tech certain places, and is just one more thing to gouge you in a crash.

EDIT - I've also seen pics that made the centerstand look damn scary at the track (yes, on an FZ6).

Not true! I have both feelers on the stock pegs and they are well worn. The sidestand only barely has the paint scraped off the edge. So far the center stand is untouched. I scrape my pegs in the same couple of turns up in Malibu/Santa Monica Mountains every time I ride. I've gotten to the point that I can almost predict the exact moment that I will hear that sound and feel the vibration. I've tried to get better at hanging off to prevent this but on these 2 turns it seems like it always happens to the pegs.

You'd think Yamaha would either have really long peg feelers, or reposition the sidestand. I wonder if you could have a bracket fabbed that would allow for it to be tucked in a bit more?

EDIT: Defy, could you please post a link to one of these rear stands that would work with the FZ6? I've looked but never been able to find such a thing.

Dude, your comprehension is lacking today. He's talking about feelers REMOVED and it appears you're talking about feelers IN PLACE. First mod I did was remove the feelers as my inside foot is generally always well weighted.

This is the one I have in black

Yeah I'm still at work - it's been a hell of a day, I've been putting out fires since I set foot in the door and a panicked coworker came rushing over to me yelling "You've got to call this client!" LOL

Thanks for the clarification and the link. That is exactly what I was looking for and probably I will get something like this, especially if I ever buy new rearsets.

Baxley LA Chock. Best $200 you'll spend for pit gear. Roll in, roll out. "Stands?!?!?! We don't need no FREAKING stands!!!"

Stands of any type have NO place on the track.

1st off... sorry to hear about your getoff at the track... i also went down this past weekend at the track but i was fortunate enough to be in the grass and low speeds... no damage to the bike...

as to the comments about sidestands and centerstands and pegs on the track... with the peg feelers removed the pegs themselves will still touch down first... next in line to touch is the side stand on the left side... ive scraped mine several times with no ill affects its actually worn it down quite a bit... and if you can touch the center stand down on the ground then your ass is in trouble... your going to be at the end of your tires traction... and your stock foot peg is going to be bent about halfway up...

yes it is smart to remove both the sidestand and centerstand before track for safety and also weight reduction... however ive not seen any real reason to romove the centerstand if you dont have a rear stand on the bike... it would be more beneficial to take off the sidestand for ground clearance issues...

and here is a link for a set of stands front and rear that will work with our swingarm without the need for spools and doesnt interfere with the location of our axles both front and rear in you need to remove your rims...

Black Widow Motorcycle Stands
you would want to order kit #1 for the FZ front and rear for under 100$ cant beat it...

Is that hand broken in 3 places? You must've had a real death grip on the handlebars and didn't let go as the bike slid.

Heal well and soon, dude.

Default Bummer

Bummer to hear of the crash guy.

I do hear that the track is quite nice. Hmm, I complimented something from NJ, must I balance it with an insult?

Another point to make is that ThatGuyX has R6 forks/brakes installed. Like most of us, he probably raised the forks in the tubes. I know that mine are 10mm above the upper clamp, and while it makes the bike turn in nice, I'm sure that the combination of the R6 forks being shorter and then raising them a bit makes the hard parts touch down even sooner than stock.

I only did one track day on my fz6 and that was back in 2004 when it was still stock, and the only thing that I was dragging were the footpegs.

I hate dragging metal pieces as it mentally throws me off, but in your case it physically though you off....

Good luck with the surgery and I hope that you heal up quickly!

Well, thatguyx, if it's any consolation it seems that you've brought the whole stand vs. ground clearance issue to many people's attention. This thread could very well keep others from repeating your mistake.

What touches down is definitely a function of rider weight and bike geometry. I weight 200 lbs nekkid, and around 220 with full gear. I've also got an R6 front end, which as jrevans pointed out is another factor. For me the sidestand definitely touched down before the left peg hit. It seems that for lighter riders this may not be the case.

Defy, do you have any of those pics? I've never touched my centerstand down, but this thread has spooked me a little bit. I'm now considering getting a sport-chock and taking the centerstand off for track days.
