I use my '07 for commuting when the weather allows here in Maryland. I have a 62 mile commute one way which my past 3 cars register the same distance traveled within a mile of each other. Yet when I ride my bike to work and home on the same 124 mile round trip highway the bike registers 142 miles traveled. The sprockets and tires are stock. So not only does the speedo read high but so does the odometer on my '07 FZ6. I don't think the guys at yamaha are trying to make us think we are going faster than reality, I just think they made a miss calculation. The speedo error and the odometer error are close to being off the same amount.

I have an '08 for communting through central London everyday (16 mile round trip).
Am lucky if I get 130 miles (which includes 10 miles on reserve).
Couldn't believe it when I took her out on the motorway a few weekends ago and got 180 ish.

Only after reading this thread do I realise how far I am off the pace.

Default I'm not buying that

I'm not buying the claim that odometer is correct and only the speedometer is off when you change gearing on the bike.

The display/calculation of speed might be based on pulses/time, but if you change the gearing you're getting more/less pulses at the tranny output shaft, for each rotation of the rear tire. In my opinion, that will change the accuracy of both the speedometer and the odometer as the computer is programmed to know that a certain number of pulses equals a certain distance.

I get 50 MPG on a good tank but my commute and riding places rarely prompt me to travel at speeds below 60 MPH. Normally I average 65 MPH on back roads, 70 on the highways.

Way to go. You almost beat my best of 65 mpg. But I have to admit I did a bit of hypermiling to get it that high. Thats about the best you'll get. I believe to get higher would take some real serious hypermiling, and some extra attention to gas saving practices that would really cramp your riding and could be dangerous even.

I have pumped up to 5.3 gallons into my bike (bone dry). I caution any one to rely on the pump accuracy, as pump to pump differences could be up to .1 to .2 tenths of a gallon. Also this could affect your mileage estimate +- 2 mpg. I always try to use the same pump when I fill up, to lessen this affect. Also gasoline quality (alcohol content) variations will also affect mpg greatly if more than a 10%. Find a quality station that supplies quality fuel, and stick with it.

I have confirmed my odometer is accurate, and don't hold to the speedo error rule of thumb any more. At least as far as my FZ6 is concerned, that may be untrue at top speed, but at legal highway speeds its dead on.

Correct! I found that my odometer reading was off by almost 8 miles for every 100. So after 1000 miles shown you may have traveled almost 1100.
