it's psychological to many.....

sometimes a new helmet makes people think they're suddenly riding a better bike

Ok now I'm not a mechanic but my hearing is quite good. So is the feeling in my left leg. And when I shift from first gear to second gear now compared to before I do
1. Hear much less of a "clunk" noise
2. My leg feels less of the "goink" when shifting...

I'm just basing this on my personal experience nothing else. I've tried changing gears at same rpm's as before and the difference is noticeable...

If you don't want to do the sprocket change, no problem As for the others who have done it know what I'm talking about (hopefully)

Whisper - Hehe yeah that would be the day! Would removing the helmet then make you a worse driver?

The sprocket had nothing to do with it. Adjusting the chain did. I realized the same reduction of the 1-2 clunk by adjusting the chain somewhere just inside the large end of the slack spec.

Nice illustrated process, BTW. Looks good.

I disagree. My chain was properly adjusted before the 15t sprocket change, and shifting from 2nd - 6th is noticeably smoother after the change.

I'd also like to encourage anyone who does any type of riding other than highway riding to do the 15t sprocket mod. It makes the bike that much more enjoyable in the city or in the twisties!

Only two questions you neglected to answer:
1. What year of FZ-6 did you do this on?
2. What is the JT part #?

Sorry....

1. I have a 2004 (faster blue one )
2. I'm not sure if this is the part # - JTF580-15 - It actually says that on the sprocket... you see it in one of the photos if you zoom in... I just bought it at my local yammi shop... There are LOTS of different 15t sprockets out there... Just get it in steel... a lot of people in the US go for the Vortex I've heard... it's up to you

Thank you!

Was hoping I wasn't the only one noticing the difference, even after adjusting the chain properly...

Thanks!

I guess you will get different opinions depending on who you ask, but for me the difference was noticeable

Chain slack might have had something to do with it but even after chain adjustment the bike really is smoother...

+1 on people doing the 15t sprocket change if you aren't a highway commuter. On my semi-long trip today I noticed at 100 km/h my rpm was 5590, while before the change it was 5290 at same speed. Not a big difference really...

Great write-up, and I agree, it's a simple mod that really makes a difference. Did mine recently, I'm sorry I waited so long.

1 thing, though. I now have a noticeable speed-related whine that wasn't there before, I'm thinking that it's due to the non-rubber-isolated sprocket (Vortex not available, so I grabbed a Sun), wondering it anyone else has experienced this?

Great write up ctr! And nice photos.

Yes there is a noticable diffrence in the sound as the chain is no longer contacting the rubber bumper. It also may be touching more on the chain guide at the front of the swing arm because it is now running down to a smaller sprocket diameter. After a few days it will sound normal again as you get used to it.

Hey I'm not against the sprocket change. In fact I would have already done it if I could go to a shop in town and just pick it up rather than ordering it. I just couldn't help but laugh at how a gear reduction magically improved the way the gears mesh in the transmission. Honestly it's like saying you put new grips on and now the bike responds to the throttle much quicker.

However I do think this is one of the best how tos I've seen on the website.

my initial response is...
your bike it ment to go in way high rmps...with a smaller sprockett it equalls higher rpms
thus resulting in slightly smoother shifts because the higher rpms...witch our bike loves
its not a drastic change but it is nicer not to have to pull the throttle so much to get into the "zone" on the bike.
its only like 20 bucks now go do it.
