Traffic is a whole other game...it's about "protecting yourself" as opposed to "not hurting yourself or others".
In the future, use some judgement but don't "refrain" just because that is what everyone else is doing or b/c you like someone.
Read the rest of my post .. ... That is why it is called Defensive riding which I learnt a lot riding in inch-to-inch traffic back in India. Check a few youtube videos searching "india traffic". They are just insane..

i read the whole thing more than once and got what you were saying. my point was that you shouldn't refrain in general and I also asked you a question. I was not tryign to pick you apart or anything like that.
EDIT - IMHO, you're the forum king of not reading posts and poor comprehension

Glad you're in one piece! I never feel as threatened on the road as when I'm near asians or texans. Very un - PC thing to say I know, I don't want to offend
See ya at the GP!

Thanks all for the great support... it do feel like you guys are my friends (some good some bad, huh Ozy )
That's a good idea about the headlight modulator...
One more thing guys, I was just like most of you right now, thinking that I ride defensively enough to be able to avoid such situations, but that shit happened fast... it all went down within maybe 5 seconds (?) and it was over. I know how you all feel when you read such accident threads "oh that wouldn`t happen to me", or "nah he just doesn`t have the skills, or don`t know how to ride defensively enough, and I do" etc etc... which is fine, and probably true, but just keep in mind that imo, it can happen to anybody at any time. Keep your concentration up at all times (especially those of you who ride everyday, try not to let it become too much of a routine, remind yourself to be alert all the time) and if there's one lesson you can take from this thread is, if you see anything weird, don`t make any assumptions about what the cager will do, just always bet on the safe side.
Showing up late to the party as usual... Damm Wave, sorry to hear about this, but really glad you're OK.
Having had two really close ones on the same trip home from work last Thursday, what you say about keeping one's concentration up rings all too true. Being aware of the danger at both of those places and approaching with shields up is what gave me the chance to evade and, in the second one, avoid a certain impact.
Re: headlight modulator - they help, for sure, but mine was on with the high beams flashing (you can see the flashing in reflective road signs 2/10ths of a mile away) and the SOB still pulled out in front of me. Proof positive that there's no way he looked both ways as he said he did. With me that' close there's no way he could have missed me if he really looked. Effin' cagers just glance and if they don't see something big headed their way, they don't see anything at all. A modulator doesn't help with that, but it's better than nothing and I have seen it get cagers' attention when they start to come out and then stop. Get one, it's a help, but not a cure-all.
re: how you felt afterward, I can relate. It was weird, no adrenaline rush, no pounding heart, no shakes in the hands, I just got back on the bike and kept goin' where I was goin', 'nuther day at the office. I think this is about the 8th time I've come really, really close like that in 10 years of riding, and it's pretty sad that avoiding life-threatening situations has become old hat.
re: riding again, a soul-searching decision for sure. I was faced with it when I decided to get the FZ 'cuz it was intended as a week-day commuter from the get-go. I asked my MSF instructor, a full-time, no-car, 25,000 mile/year rider himself, how he reconciled his responsibility to himself and those who love him with a conscious decision to put himself at greater risk every day. He said (basically) that it comes down to making a commitment to ride as safe as possible and make smart decisions every minute you're on the bike. If it's a part of you and you have to do it (as it is with me), you can for the most part uphold your responsibility to your family by making that commitment to riding safe at all times, perhaps denying yourself some fun in the process. But it's better than being dead or crippled.

+1
I hope it did not sound like I was trying to say that a modulator is some kind of panacea.

Funny, panacea was the first word that came to mind in my post. Changed it to cure-all 'cuz I thought panacea might be too big a word for some of the monosyllabic vocabularies here (right, Ozy?)
Dang It!!!! Dude, I wouldn't give up riding totally, but I would perhaps give up riding on streets like that in the LB. Better to take your chances with deer and dogs out in the canyons or high speeds on the track, than with all the half-blind, poorly skilled, in-a-rush, cagers. Get an economical car for use on boring, busy, dangerous, straight roads like that. My suggestion to a fellow rider.

Wavex, I am sorry. I compared your bike to the Predator and now it is dead. Having Arnold as your Governator must of had something to do with that. Again I apologize.
Glad you are okay.

Dave,
So sorry to hear about the latest accident. Glad you're ok.
If you do decide to get another bike and it's the FZ6, skip V4.0 and go straight to V5.0. Maybe that will bring better luck .

Great advice about not letting it become a routine and being on the safe side all the time!!
When I ride and assume that people in cars are absolutely insane and can do anything at anytime, I dont get too many close calls.
