Default Cracked Oil Pan

What a bunch of bullshit this is.

31 foot pounds is way to much for the torque on the drain bolt. Figures, first oil change I follow the manual and crack my pan. There is no way the oil pan should be cracking so easy.

Doing a search I see I am not the only one. Fuck !

Is the pan fixable? If not, new from ronayers.com or you can check to see if any of the people parting out bikes here have one for sale.

This is why I refuse to use a torque wrench when changing my oil. I ust a torque wrench on just about EVERYTHING else...

I have never in my life put a torque wrench to an oil drain plug...ever. I approach a drain plug like I do spark plugs. Hand tighten then 1/4 turn with a wrench and I'm done.

Believe me, lesson learnt.

It cracked right along the casting seam. About 3/4 inch in length. Very slow leak, but I am not sure how to fix something like that

JB WELD would work if you take the pan off to let it set. Then retap it if you need to. It would be a lot cheaper than a new one.

Are you sure it was ft-lbs, not in-lbs?

If it was a defective part, take it in for a warranty claim. You will have to bitch, piss and moan about it, but Yamaha will honor their warranty if they are at fault.

Definitely 31 ft/lbs. I use a calibrated torque wrench every time with no stripping or cracking. I must just be lucky.

I would check with the dealer and try to get it replaced under warranty. It probably won't do any good but definatley worth a try.

seriously, jb weld it if you can't get it fixed under warranty. Just keep an eye on it to check for leaks. I would heat up the pan with a torch and make sure it is good and clean, rough up the surface a bit and apply it from the outside just in case any breaks off.

been there, done that. i thought about JB weld, but if it's like the crack I had (right through the threads and about 1/2" out, you may need to get it TIG welded. I ended up going with ronayers.com and buying a new pan, as well as a new gasket. I think it was around $80 total and two weeks of down time I still get a little worried when I change my oil, always scared about that oil pan. Now I just do it to what "feels" right. Soon I'm just gonna to it hand tight + 3/4 turn and then safety wire it all.

I torque mine to 20 Nm, wich is probably a bit more than enough. No problems for now

Do you have part numbers for both the pan and gasket? Looks like I will be going this route.
