I complained about it to the dealer. Threads should strip, but the pan shouldn't crack. IMO its a design flaw having that seam positioned where it cracks so easily. Dealer said they contacted Yamaha about it, and they agreed to cover the part replacement under the warranty, but not the labor. I agreed to that - it's not that hard a job. You should definitely try to get the dealer to cover it. Snug tight from now on...

Just a quick update for people that have this problem in the future.

I ordered the parts from Ron Ayers.com. Below are the part numbers and pricing. Shipping was quick, once I decided to go this way.

The oil pan is 4S8-13417-00-00, and is $97.51
The oil pan gasket is 5VX-13414-01-00, and is $5.56

It took a few hours to drain the remaining oil, drop the exhaust, drop the pan, re-install the new pan with gasket, put the exhaust back on, and finally put the oil back in. Pretty simple job. Hand tightened the drain plug this time and then 1/4 turn with rachet.....I still stand by the fact that 31ft lbs is to much and the seam by the drain plug is weak.

Forgot, you also have to remove the oil level switch to take the pan off.

Sure was good to get back on her after all this time.

Did you try using the warranty and get turned down?

Didn't even bother. I just wanted to get it fixed and this seemed the quickest, hassle free way.
I am Canadian and purchased the bike in the US, so I didnt want the hassle of going over to the dealer I purchased it at to try and plead my case. I did call Yamaha Canada and since it is an AMerican bike they did not have my vin on file.

I may call Yamaha America and tell them what happened and see if anything comes of it. I am not to worried about it now though, bike is fixed.
