Hey metalrat, how hard was it to remove the exhaust heat shields, and did you use a special heat-resistant spraypaint?

I think I may have to steal your idea. How much time did it take?

I used heat resistant black spray paint on them. The complete thread is here:

Thanks nimzotech!

Has anyone tried spraypainting the rearsets or passenger pegs, rather than powdercoating? Powdercoating is going to be close to $200 for these few bits - spraypaint (even the heat resistant kind) is MUCH cheaper.

Not too hard.
Take off the seat.
Take off some bolts.
Take off the FE kit.
Loosen the tail pipe form the CAT.
Remove stock muffler.
Two screws hold the heat shield on.

Did not use heat restitant paint. The heat shield is plastic and the way it mounts it is protected from heat(LOL)

I used krylon interior-exterior. Dries in 12 minutes or less.
If it does not hold up, I'll get some other paint. It is pretty easy.

I think it will be fine. Iv'e had the bike up to running temp a few times and it is looking solid.

I felt like the rears set needed the durability of powder coating. Your boots are always gonna be rubbing on them.

If you wanna try rattle can, you can always powder coat em later.

Just wear black boots(lol)

Once you go black... you never go back

See, that is what I am wondering about - if it will rub off or not (my boots are black, BTW). And if it will look like shit or look OK. I'd hate to f- it up and then be committed to a $200 powdercoat job, rather than just leave them the weird silver color.

The radiator guards and exhaust heat shield I am less concerned about since they aren't in contact with anything anyways.

I would think that if you just use a can and then it gets messed up, it would be a harder job to powder coat them after the fact. If you are thinking about powder coating them, I would do it first. Or you could go the anodizing route. That tends to look great and it can take some abuse. There is also kits you can do that yourself to save money.

When you take aluminum in to get powder coated, it is dipped and stripped.
You could not mess it up enough for them to notice.

That is one of the beauties of powder coating durability.

If you don't wanna spend the coin to coat em now... rattle can em.

I was real concerned about the finish on the forks and shield.
As it turns out... It is kinda hard to fuck up flat black(lol)
