There is a lot of potential for something like this, and it will probably become readily available in a lot of the common gear brands in a few years.
Pulling the plug by accident through tangle, or simply getting off the bike to check something, has to be overcome.

Obviously they can help but I think the help would be limited. It still wouldnt stop broken arms amd legs, body injuries etc but would probably help to reduce neck injury.

Wouldn`t you just get sick of your mates pulling that plug though??

Hey!
sry to say so, but forget those, they aren`t very good...
1st they only help when you egt off of the bike...
2nd they take 0.4-0.8 seconds to inflate!! :-O
3rd they use Co2 cartridges, which can hurt you plus are slooooowww in inflating as mentioned above...

look at this though!!

YouTube - Cool Bike Airbag

it`s made by Dainese, its an "real" airbag inside the speed/wind bump thingie on racing leathers! in inflates in 30-40 thousands of a second and wokrs by a wireless g-forces sensor which measures a zillion parameters some 100times a second ;-)

its far superior!

check out this article
Rubber Magazine - Dainese D-Air Tested at Valencia GP

as soon as it is available i will buy it!!
because it really protects the region which which is still unprotected the neck! (the big version) plus gives you good chances eevn survivng 50+miles frontal crash in cars side or so....

i just read about a godlwing driver hitting a tree with almost 70 kmh, and surviving with almost no major injuries thanks to his airbag on that bike...

sre nobody wants tod rive a sofa on wheels ;-) but that jacket and/or speed-hump thing does sound really good to me...

that system shown in video is the "race" version...

they are going to offer a "strada" version also:
which will be much larger, come in fomr of a vest and feature a 90-95 liter Air-bag rather than this smaller 20-25 liter racing version...

it still is in testing phase,
but they are confident to release the product in some 6-12 months, although it got delayed a looot! yet, the opriginally wnated those things out in 2001 then 2003... but tehy told me (i phoned them) it was very hard to write code, so the system woud recognize a lowsider for example especially when during races and so much forces allready there, and so much bending ovr, that when going to sliding and lowsider its hard for the system to recognize...

nontheless these airbags systems "d-air" is also very good for head-on collision once the "big" version is out, since it inflates in the time when the bike touches the car for example and then when the biker hits against the car the airbag is allready inflated!! not so with the "cheap" veriosns with Co2 cartridges... plus they won`t open up at all, unless you fall off the bike...

I´ll try to find that animetd gif, that wa sshowing Rossi wearing one of the strada versions....hope i can finde it again...

Alex
