Thoughts on Barrt, Amsoil, and the meaning of life
About Barrt: more and more I'm thinking he's just a troll trying to stir the pot. Anybody who can come up with stuff like:
- Amsoil crushing the broken down molecules so they get trapped in the filter 4 times faster than with other oils so they don't get into your clutch plates and cause them to slip
- broken molecules with sharp edges that cause increased friction
- 20 mph increase in top speed just by changing oil
is either a) from another planet b) on some really good drugs c) a complete frikkin' idiot or d) makin' it up to get a reaction. I'm goin' with d). Whatever the case, it's good entertainment.
About Amsoil: Yeah, I use it. Not because of any hype, because someone fooled me into thinking it's liquid gold, or because I like supporting MLM schemes. I use it because it's a good product, it's synthetic, and it's not produced by a Big Oil company. I've used full synth since the late '80's, Valvoline IRRC. Made a difference in every engine I put it in. When I got my Harley in '03, Valvoline didn't make a motorcycle synth so I did some internet searching on synth m/c oils. Found a lot of data including some test results that put Amsoil at or near the top in most categories. One of those tests was in fact financed by Amsoil, but was done by an independent lab. The fact that they financed it doesn't automatically invalidate it in my mind, somebody's gotta pay for it. The report they published showed other oils coming out on top in some of the categories and Amsoil in the middle of the pack in some of them. They may have been selective about the results they published, but I'm a lot less suspicious of them when they show some not so stellar results for their own oil. I also found some data that seemed to be completely independent, a less thorough report that showed Amsoil coming out on top in one of the most critical tests - the 4-ball wear test. So I tried it. The oil tank dipstick on my Sportster is also a thermometer and the normal operating temperature immediately dropped 20 to 25 degrees F. Was running 190 - 195, dropped to 170 and never gets to 200 even in the hottest conditions. Other guys I rode with under the same conditions were seeing temps in the 225+ range with fossil oil, and this was in an external tank, not the crankcase. Less heat = less friction. So it works. Would other synth oils work as well? Probably so, at least not enough of a difference to notice. Like I said, I use it because they're not Big Oil, and they more or less invented it - in the early 70's they produced the first API certified synth. I don't give a flyin' f%^* that they use MLM to distribute it. So what. It's an inexpensive way to get the product out there without paying high marketing $$ and ordinary folks get to make some money off of it. I'm not part of the MLM, I order straight from the factory and get it shipped to me, somebody makes a little bit on the $100 a year or so that I spend on oil, I don't care. Yeah, MLM's have a bad rep, deservedly so in many cases, but for me it's about the product. I change at 5000 mi. on the bikes and 10,000 on the cars and the oil always comes out clean and clear dark brown, never black. Nut cases like Barrt do more to give Amsoil a bad name and turn people off to it than any dealer he claims to be putting it down in order to sell their own oil. So that's why I use it, it works for me. I emphatically don't care what anybody else uses or why and I'm not going to try to convince anyone that they should use anything different than what they're using now.
The meaning of life: A long ride on the back roads of the foothill country in central PA on a beautiful sunny day. Can't wait.
Not really, just a lot of bad talk about Amsoil and just wanted to say that not everyone who uses it is a nut case like him, if he really is a nut case, not a troll. There are legitimate reasons for someone using it, just as any other oil.
And a very clever troll at that....notice that he/she never reacts to any direct insults or personal attacks? ;)
Noticed that too. Lotta shite flung his way and he never really reacts to it. Like someone else said, he's like that slobbery kid in the back of the short bus with both thumbs up his nose banging his head on the window... or a troll.

If you go back to some of Barrt's earlier threads, he got pretty bent out of shape occasionally, which just caused everyone to pile it on more. I think he's hilarious.

i don't know why but this thread got me really jonesing to be back on my bike. i think it was your back roads mention, jazzcatt.
maybe the meaning of life is to have a passion for something....
Got that right. Since around junior high I haven't done a whole lot of different things, but the things I have done - dirt bikes/motocross, bowling, racquetball, bicycling, jazz concerts/festivals, and street bikes - I've been really passionate about. Kind of an immersion thing. Guys at work see me riding in on the FZ and it's single digits that morning and they're like "Man, you must really love to ride" and I'm like "yep".
I just care about the people in this forum
I am confident once they do switch to Amsoil they will love it and start respecting me.
I am just pointing out some additional things I found out about Amsoil over the years.
Yes, when you use Amsoil your oil filter will trap more dirt and the oil filter will clog up faster, so its very, very important to use a good quality filter and change the filter more.
This is a proven fact, you can tell when you remove the oil filter t feels like its as heavy as solid lead.
Amsoil Oil will last forever in ur bike, but the filter won't!
I trust the oil, but I don't trust the filter.
change the oil filter every 3000 to 4000 miles, but change the Amsoil at every 6000 to 12,000 miles.
I promice you guys this.
The first time you switch to Amsoil, run ur bike with Amsoil for 3000 miles, then remove the oil filter, I promice you the oil filter wll feel as heavy as a brick of lead,
cut the oil filter apart and you will be amazed how much dirt is inside of it.
Amsoil does its job, it cleans ur engine
When you guys change ur oil using cheap oil you notice how the oil comes out as clean as the day you poured it in?
thats because the oil is not cleaning ur engine
to me a better sign that the oil is working and cleaning ur engine is when the oil is dirty.
Noticed that too. Lotta shite flung his way and he never really reacts to it. Like someone else said, he's like that slobbery kid in the back of the short bus with both thumbs up his nose banging his head on the window... or a troll.
given the above post i'm going with the first description..........

Piece of advice: Don't hold your breath.
That's not the way to get people to respect you.
I don't know if anybody on this board respects me, but they way to get respect is; yes, have an opinion about something, write about it once, substantiate it with valid evidence, and leave it at that. When you keep going on and on about something with claims that are quite wild (20 mph from oil....) you lose all respect.
I must say though, these last few days are helping get over the fact that I haven't been on my girl in over 3 months! I may get on her on Saturday though!

As always, a well thought out and rational post, jazzcat.
I probably should qualify my statements regarding MLM. I have no problem with anyone buying and using products distributed in that manner. I don't have a problem with people involved with MLM except that (in my personal experiences) they are often unable to be near or converse with others without always trying to 'work' the situation into a sale or recruitment.
I've had relatives, friends, and co-workers who were involved with selling Amway, electronics, oil, prepaid phone cards, etc., and for whatever reason they just couldn't drop the subject of having me work for them so we (they) could make money. Then, I would be expected to harass everyone I knew so they could work for me. Hell, whatever people need to do (legally) to make a few bucks is fine with me. I know that not all people involved with MLM are nutcases but enough of the ones I've met were, so my perspective is a bit slanted. There's not much worse than going to dinner at an in-laws or having a beer after work with a coworker and being bugged about selling crap after you've told them numerous times that you're not interested. Part of that problem was due to the "sell! sell! sell!" audio tapes some MLM outfits use to help brainwash their reps.
I've seen test results of Amsoil and will admit that it's probably a fine product regardless of the bizarre, illogical claims constantly made by bart.
Ahh- the meaning of life...All I can say is "Come on spring, hurry up and get here so I can search for the answers to the universe on two wheels."
One thing I will question is the following statement:

Apparently marketing money isn't an issue for Amsoil. Having the brand name plastered all over moto-x bikes, racecars, and dragsters isn't cheap, I would guess it's extremely expensive and may not pay off as much as if the products were readily available. Years ago I watched alot of moto-x, super-x, and went to the national races. The Amsoil name is everywhere. I tried to find it in stores and cycle shops- no luck. I finally found 2 distributors but one was pretty far away and the other sold it out of his house. He worked weird hours and the idea of meeting someone at midnight to buy some oil wasn't appealing so I never tried it.

The big score: anyone, any sex, over 75 years old has been upped to 100 points.
