The only thing that I would've done first is to pull him aside and attempt to reason to him. If i was doing something stupid like this, I would've expected a friend to first talk to me before calling the cops. If after the chat he is being an asshat you can wipe your hands clean and and called the cops.
Keeping it in the family is something that should've been attempted before bringing the outsiders in.

Did you tell him that you've informed on him? If you're truly righteous, you'd do that and deal with the impact. He may never appreciate your concern or your action and may keep recklessly speeding anyway. The dude has issues - are you helping with them or are you just ratting on him?

Mate you have done the right thing. You can pick your friends, but not your family. I'm sorry to say but its a matter of time if he continues to wear no protection and continues to ride like a complete dickhead , before the cops get him, and trust me the more he pisses them off the more time he will do.

Would he be able to afford a new bike if the current one was "gone"?
I think what you did is OK like everyone else, but he will still have the bike and if they come down on him it might cause him to act out even more.
So maybe if the bike was somehow mysteriously smashed to bits in his garage, he would no longer be able to ride or afford a new bike. Maybe drain the oil and let the engine pop next time he rides it... Money can be reacquired, life and limbs cannot...

I've heard an engine full of bleach left overnight will trash an engine no problem! Just drain the oil and dump it in. I think they did it on Mythbusters. Rusted out a car engine overnight.

Thanks guys, I definitely feel better that everyone here backed me up. As for trying to sabotage his bike, that may be a bit much in my opinion. I want him to keep riding, but to just do it safely. I think I'm gonna ask his parents if I can chip in towards a proper riding jacket and gloves for his Christmas present. You gotta start somewhere...

Godd Job, The life you save maybe your own.
This is a punk kid and needs to be dealt with in the same manner he is treating the public. You know his mom and dad, ask if they need help dealing with his "issues" and unlicensed acts of public mayhem. Do they not know about the problem. Offer to stop by and visit, deflate his tires, take the battery, maybe even offer to make the bike disappear for a few months. I expect its financed, and mom and dad are on the bill, if they don't want another one, they need to take some corrective action, or suffer the loss of their son by prison or death.
If mom and dad will not step up to the plate (I'm assuming he still lives at home, and still respects them and/or needs their assistance: rent, bills, food, college assistance.) and get him to obey the law and respect the safety of others, much less himself. Then someone needs to "fix" his bike for him.
Suggestions:
Next time his back is turned and he's riding with you, pull a plug wire or two. Leaving him with a few costly unneeded repairs, I doubt he'd figure that problem out right away if you do it right. Back the clutch cable out, loosen the clamp on a radiator tube, or lose the cap on the radiator.
I wouldn't suggest such acts usually, but he's part of your family, and sometimes family has to take matters into their own hands at times like this and work to together to solve a problem, think out side the box on this one and I bet together your family can find a solution to save his life in more ways than one.

You will never regret reporting him. If you did nothing and a trajedy happens, you will regret it the rest of your life.

Sabotaging the bike is not going to affect his behavior. You did the right thing, and keep reporting him if he keeps up the bad behavior. There's not much more you can do. You can try buying him some gear, but he still might not wear it, and that's just part of the problem. You might want to get him to read some crash stories and show him some of the crash porn out there. There's plenty of it just in this forum. In the end, a good healthy fear of the law is probably all that will help. Eventually he'll probably end up having his bike impounded if he doesn't crash it first. Good luck.
