Default K & N air filter

Has anyone tried the K&N air filter for the FZ6? If so, how do you like it? I put one in my concours years ago, but I don't think it was much of an improvement.

I put one in. I cant notice any difference in power/mileage/sound. But, it is cost effective. The main reason I got it was the local parts house had one in stock and didnt have the yamaha in stock and I didnt want to wait on the order.

What is the part # for the K&N? Also, does anyone know if Wix makes a filter for our bikes?

I've never been a fan of the K&N stuff. www.calsportbike.com sells Pipercross filters which are reuseable oiled foam which is much better than gauze IMO. I just got mine in last week but have yet to install it.

I ordered one along with 2 filters, also noticed no difference in sound/power etc. No complaints either.

How much is a Yamaha or aftermarket paper filter? And how much is the K&N?

Foam > K&N any day of the week.

The K&N filters are less restrictive because they filter MUCH less effectively than the paper or oiled foam filters.

I would keep it stock unless you are going to to airbox mods, exhaust and a PCIII.

I just checked out their website, and they don't have one for a FZ6.

It is a fairly common belief...I found a link to a test done with K&N vs other filters on bimmerforums.com (a while ago)...I can try to find it again. MANY enthusiasts on that forum (some of whom are quite educated) are strong believers in the foam/paper > oiled mesh.

Makes sense though...its increased air flow comes from it having a wider mesh..and the oil is what it uses to 'grab' dirt particles.

With that said, I have run K&N filters before and never had a problem.

Unfortunately the links I found are dead now :-(

But here is one page of debate with some good info:

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...foam+vs.+K%26N

Frankly...if I can see right through it (as with EVERY k&N I have owned) I am sure dust is getting through.

It may be biased, but there is some info here too:

http://www.searchforparts.com/import...air_filter.php

And this excerpt from another thread:

Quote:
Superior Filter Efficiency
Unifilter holds a certificate for both the Korean and Japanese market entry. This certificate allows Unifilter to be used for both defence applications and government transport applications.

Our filter was tested at the Seoul University and was rated at 99.2% efficiency with a micron rating of 1 to 2 micron collection ability. As a comparison - paper filter efficiency rates at approximately 96% and 30 to 35 micron collection.. (This is for original equipment paper air filters - aftermarket would rate no where near this).

You may also care to note a recent K and N advertisement that stated that a foam outer was now available for their filter which improved the K and Ns dust retention by 90% whilst only increased air flow restriction by 2%. This would indicate the Dust Retention of a K and N would be in excess of 100 micron - if the foam cover produces only 2% restriction - why not use a foam filter in the first place.
There has been a HUGE raging debate on K&N vs. Foam in the every end of the motorsports world from cars to ATVs....

So the question is where have YOU been that you have not heard it?
