Another comparison, only looking at airflow:

I'm not sure anyone knows for sure as to whether or not K&N is providing enough filtering...but I am not taking that chance with a bike.

Old-ish cars...sure...but anything high performance gets OEM or high quality foam filters with a cover.

I went back to a paper air filter on my Dodge Cummins after steady oil samples showed increasing silicon (dirt) in the engine oil. The very next oil sample after going back to paper showed silicon back to normal levels. The one thing they were right on was increased airflow, she gained 2psi boost....but at what cost??? I'll stick w/ the paper. Just my 2 cents.

I think you have to ask about your riding/driving environment also. If you have very mild intake conditions, and regular OCI's it probably wont hurt anything. The K&N supposedly shouldnt be cleaned until 20-30K miles, at which point dirt is actually used at increasing the filtering efficiency. By keeping a clean filter, you get flow at the cost of reduced filtering. K&N is no magic bullet, its a trade off of dirt (silicon) vs. flow.

I doubt a K/N will make any difference is the YAMAHA FILTER is also OIL TREATED.

Foam would be much better a filter than cotton (K/N). It's apples and oranges technically.

Well, the reason I asked the question - I used a K&N air filter in my concours for 100,000 miles and it still runs great, so I don't think using a K&N will hurt the motor - but I never noticed any performance or mileage gains with it either, so I don't really think it was worth the investment. I have also been happily using their oil filters for years.... so I just wondered if it was more effective in the FZ6.

Apparently not - so I think I will stick with the OEM filter - thanks

+1 Installed the K&N before the rest of the new exhaust system (Leo Vince) arrived, for which the PCIII - not installed - is tuned, and no noticeable difference in sound or power. Not sure on the fuel efficiency.

Glad to see at least one of you guys above, did the scientific approach with oil analysis...in my opinion that is good proof that the K&N filters DO allow more stuff into your engine.

I'm not saying they are bad, I used them for years on cars and never had a problem...but like anything in the world of engineering....they offer a tradeoff.

Contrary, to what others say about making no difference at all, my experience is opposite. I swapped mine out and it was not dirty. But man what difference!! Smooth, linear power delivery through all shifts. I am Happy!!

Default K&N filter installation -easy does it

Here is my original posting from fz6-forum.com:
K&N Air Filter Installation - easy does it - Yamaha FZ6 Forums - International FZ6 Motorcycle Community Forum

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Items Needed:
Allen wrench 4mm and 5mm
Phillips screwdriver
K&N air filter (YA-6004)
Time: < 15 min.

1. Using the 4mm Allen wrench remove two screws holding the side fairing. Repeat on other side.

2. Slide off the side fairing and repeat on other side.

3. Take off the Seat

4. Using 5mm Allen wrench remove the two bolts holding the gas tank.

5. Slowly lift up the gas tank, making sure not to accidently disconnect the wires underneath tank. Using bungee cords and/or string secure the gas tank to back passenger handles.

6. With a Phillips screwdriver remove six screws from the air box.

7. Lift up the top air box cover and remove old filter.

8. Making sure “FRONT” faces the front of the bike slide in the new K&N air filter in the air box.

9. Repeat steps 1 – 7 in reverse order.

10. Enjoy a cold one. Cheers!
