My accident was 100% my fault... I know what I did wrong (speeding, target fixation, could have leaned bike more and taken corner) but that doesn't mean it wasn't my fault.
I'd put motorcycle accidents closer to 100% rider error, because there's almost always SOMETHING you can do to think/look/plan ahead.

The only way to take COMPLETE control is to never thumb the starter in the first place! Once you leave your driveway, you are, to a cetain extent, at the mercy of this world (deer included!).

I see so many people riding without protective gear around here. A few days ago this guy gunned it out of a parking lot and as soon as he lined his bike up, hit a wheelie. Then almost completely stopped in the road up ahead and was looking back at me as if I was supposed to give him a thumbs up or something. He had nothing but a t shirt, shorts and a pair of tennis shoes.
I admit a few times I have ridden around town in just a t-shirt and some jeans but in the back of my mind I'm always thinking about how bad it would suck to crash without protection. Those few times I did ride without any real riding gear I rode more cautiously.
I don't know what the stats are as far as gear (excluding helmet) and fatal injuries goes but I am guessing that there is a lot of really nasty injuries that could be prevented just from wearing simple stuff like gloves, boots, jacket and maybe some pants. So lack of gear in combination with unsafe riding habits would be at the top of my list just from what I see around here and Atlanta. Guess my post went astray from the topic, shit.
Seriously though wtf, stunts and zero gear?

I do play around with my bike, but only if I'm wearing gear. I could care less what some other idiot is doing, as soon as he hits the pavement thats the end of his career, and usually a good bike too.
And you people saying EVERY accident is preventable... Just because there is something you should have done doesn't mean its actually possible to do it. You know the saying in hindsight everything is 20/20. And its not like you can control what other people do. If someone decides to reverse into your bike at a stop because they want to change lanes its still your fault right?
Military statistics indicate that a significant amount of injuries/accidents involving any sort of training with specialized equipment occurs after approx 3 months of course completion. I forgot where I picked that statistic up, but it seems true. Thats just enough time to become familiar and (overly)confident in your abilities. Reality checks are real, shit happens. Just try your best not to be so deserving of it.

Agreed. Just ask TERMINAL (FZ6 rider/member) about wearing leather pants. He's a believer now.

yessir....you likely did not leave a good amount of space between you and the other car and then you must have forgot to use your horn.... two little itty bitty things that would have prevented it.

Leaving vast amounts of space and using the horn still won't prevent somebody else from making a mistake. I didn't specify space because really theres no reasonable distance you can keep without getting yourself rear ended. Heh, its starting to sound like you've never been in traffic before. But whatever, not going to try and explain my point, hopefully all this prevention talk helps everyone ride safer.
Also to help out these statistics a bit, it doesn't hurt to convince your cager friends to be on the lookout for motorcycles.A few people I know over exaggerate this and just started giving bikes the right of way everywhere, but I guess that leads to an increase in single vehicle accidents?? But whatever, if everyone were more cautious then everyone would be safer.

Yeah it might not prevent a mistake, but it might just save your ass....so what are you looking for a magic potion to protect yourself? You gave a scenario, I gave a couple things that might save your ass....Then you change the story to a rearend issue, when you originally commented about someone backing into you....
and for the record....yeah, I've been in traffic. I've been driving for years in Some of Canada's and the US's biggest cities.....

Come on now, we all know Fort Erie isn't the booming metropolis it used to be! lol
Although I have to think that riding on the basketweave section of 401 in traffic is good training for dealing with idiot drivers.

yeah fort erie is laid back, but remember, I cut my teeth learning to drive in toronto rush hour traffic doing delivery runs and then I've been in every major city in canada since then....Montreal tops Toronto as far as crazyness is concerned and Vancouver tops them all as far as idiots are concerned.
I believe my experience warrants my opinions...those who disagree are just grasping at whatever they can to discredit me. And I really don't care, I ride my ride to survive....and thus far I have done a pretty good job at it.

Not trying to discredit you or deride your opinion, just that it is too unrealistic for me to handle. People can have different opinions, but people who pass of theirs as facts just piss me off a bit, no matter how much experience they have.
I didn't change the story, although i guess i did make the mistake of assuming I wouldn't have to be more specific... Thats just the logical next step: if you leave more room in front of you, your more likely to get a cager crawling up your tailpipe at stop. At a stop if I leave half a carspace or more, or I'm at the front at a light, I get almost one car length behind me. any more space ahead of me and they push closer and closer. Once we're moving though, thats a whole nother mess... ugh. Maybe its just like that here, but I doubt it.
