Default oil volume of a FZ6 oil change?

Im a tad confused. and I dont want to screw it up

the owners guide says with a replacement filter the oil change volume is like 2.9liters

so I put that in and I just barely see oil at the tippy bottom of the dipstick. so I put in almost another .5 liters to get it up near the top of the dip stick range.

ok, then I start it. no oil lights, seems good. but I turn it off and pull the dipstick and its way down towards the bottom, a good 3/4" lower than it was.

with that info, should I add more oil? I assume it went down due to it circulating the oil and it not settling back down yet, do I want to read the oil level after it circulates or after it settles back down?

1. add the specified amount to your empty bike

2. get your bike up to operating temp

3. pull and wipe the dipstick

4. put the dipstick back in but do not screw it in at all

5. pull it out and take a look...anywhere within the IXXXXI section is within spec

get it? got it? good.

It takes 3 quarts, not 3 liters.

If you use Amsoil Synthetic Motorcycle Engine Oil 10W40 you can increase the oil change intervals to 8000 miles, but at 4000 miles change only the oil filter, then add just enough new Amsoil to make up from what you lost changing the filter.
The oil will last for 8K miles but the filter won't.

Doesn't the oil pour out when you take off the filter?

And how do you know the filter will not last for 8000 miles? Did it speak up and tell you?

My Ducati S2R has a 7000 mile oil change interval, there is nothing about changing the filter midway through...

Re-read the manual. It tells you how to check the oil level. You do not screw it in when taking the oil level reading.

Just for the record, 3 litre = 3.17 quarts. It should have been too full...

I'm hoping it wasn't on its side stand when you measured from the dipstick.

That's probably what happened.
