Pictures! I took some shots of the bike today before, during, and after I was working on it. I used a Brass Punch to tap the new races on, and a .003 thick feeler gauge to make sure the race was flush against the frame all the way around. Now I jsut need to find a 1 1/4 copper pipe, or something else, to set the lower race/bearing. Also have a nifty bearing packer. You can see it sitting behind the lower tripple and stem. Is the white cone thing with the metal rod sticking out of it. Can also see the new lower All Balls Racing tappered bearing in that shot. Enjoy!

Okay I stand corrected.I should have ordered new bearings. Random you took better pics than I but i'll post mine anyhow. Mbodell...N O P L A N E ticket for Y O U !!! I'm about 5 miles from the beach as the crow flies. The salt air isn't as bad as the salt they put on the roads up yonder ways. I suck ! I will order new bearings and yes i'll have to do all that labor again but more so. I only dropped the main steering nut and let the front drop out enough to repack stock bearings. Those bearings that Yamaha put in our bikes are the cheapest pieces of junk i've ever seen. I recomend a major recall on the steering head bearings upper and lower. If you have to cut cost it should not be on a part as important as these bearings. Good luck to all.

The bearings are commonly used on their bikes. The R6 lower tripple that came with my forks had the stock bearings still on it. They look the exact same as the stock FZ6 bearings. I think that bottom seal is just a hunk of junk. Doesnt seal very well and allows moisture to get up in there.

more
pic of four bikes is back to work the next day.
I had a thud in the front end when I drove over the slightest bumps in the road before repacking and a slight head shake when decelarating. Both of these problems went away after the repacking of the cheap stock bearings !

I agree, the plating was still present on the upper (nice and shiny) but the lower was raw metal.

I got some Marine Grade Grease to pack my new bearings with. I was also getting the Headshake under decel/hard brakeing last week. Was having a devil of a time keeping the bike in its own lane when coming to a stop! Also started to notice the thud sound/feel when hitting the brakes.

Randomchaos,
So did you finish up with the repair. Hows the bike doing?

Donnie869,
No plane ticket? Come on! I'll sweeten the deal and bring beer
Glad you at least got it repacked. Yamaha should really consider recalling those seals.

Got the two races on the frame set last night. My dad took measurements of the lower race/bearing, and believes he found a pipe that will work to set it. After that, its back together with her, and testing! Not going to get to work on it tonight though, hanging out with my g/f.

When you get them back together, let me know how it works out. I'm finding that I still get a "thud" when I hit bigger, hard-edged bumps. I'm thinking I just didn't tighten the upper nuts up enough. At least my high-speed head shake went away.

Of course, I actually grew up in Central Pa, so Rolling Rock and Yuengling are my two favorite local beers.
