Default Woo-Hoo.... New FZ6 owner in the house....

Well I'm proud to say I'm a new FZ6 owner. Yep, ditched the GMC Suburban getting 10mpg in the city for my new ride.

It's been a few years since I rode my old 1980 Honda CB650 and I was a little nervous getting on my new ride with .4 miles on it. Gave it up when I got married and had my first son (I have four now). Wanted to be a Dad for awhile. After about 10 summers of me sighing as bikes went past, and watching gas prices go up, up, up, my wife could see I had the jones.

Did a little research on my own. Really, really, REALLY wanted a BMW R1150RT but not the maintenance costs. Read some great reviews on the FZ6 and some not so good. Needed a touring bike and wanted something with a little zip as well. Worked with an excellent guy at the dealership and settled on the Yamaha.

Picked it up last Friday and told the guy he had my permission to laugh his ass off when I ditched it in the little pile of sand taking it out.

That initial rush and blast of wind in my ears brought back all those old memories. Made even more special by the whine of my new FZ6. Next to religious man.

.4 miles was Friday. After today I have 88 on it. God I love this ride!

I've got questions and would appreciate the help. (Of course I will search the forums for the answers as well)

Q1 - What it the best tank protection to have? I've noticed some slight scuffing on the tank and would like to keep it clean

Q2 - I noticed in the front headlight fairing there seems to be areas for the turn signals to be placed. Looks like an easy mod. Can this be done?

Q3 - I love my FZ6 and plan to use it for commuting between work and home. There will be times I'd like to take my beautiful wife out to dinner or the movies. Can someone recommend a brand of disc lock or some other security that works well on the FZ6?

Glad to be a new owner and will keep up with the forum posting as long as I can be helpful to the new FZ6 owners.

to the forum...

You left out important details!

What color is it? slow BLUE or the scorching fast RED?

What year is it? a leftover 06, or a new 07?

...and of course:

A1) Tank protection really varies, and it also depends on where you're experiencing your "scuffing".... on the top, or the sides. personally, I used the tankslapper product and have been very pleased with it. It was only $15 I think. http://www.thetankslapper.biz/

A2) Yes, it is possible, and it's fairly easy. Do a search for "pod mod" and all will be revealed.

A3) This will garner a lot of different opinions... personally, I use a Xena alarmed disc lock, and I've been very pleased with it. I like the fact that it attracts attention because it's so annoyingly loud. http://www.xenasecurity.com/home/current/lock/

Cheers, and welcome back to the wonderful world of motorcycling

Homeboy! Minneapolis in the hizzy!!!
Congrats on the bike. Just got my 07 about a month ago.
I'm in Minnetonka. Picked mine up at Hopkins Hitching Post. No complaints about them so far... everybody there has been great.
I'll mirror kerkeb... get thee some uncaged sliders on thy ride ASAP. I made use of mine rather quickly... much to my shame
Ride safe. See you on the roads!

Depending on how you ride, you'll love the 40-65 MPG. I average 42 MPG but recently have been able to get 50 MPG riding 85 MPH for 45 mile stretches.

I bought a full body protector kit for my R6S from TheTankSlapper.Biz for $55 (only put on tank protector portion so far). I'm happy with my purchase. You can't tell it's there unless you're a foot away and it seems durable. The tank protector is only $15 and I'd say it's well worth the money.

None, you don't need it, you're not laying on the tank. I've never put anything on my tank other than wax once a year and it looks fine.

I figured I start out with the boring Blue since I'm an old guy.

And yeah... it's an '07. I was tempted to head to another dealership across town for an '06 with the full factory warranty for $500 less but didn't want to make the trip and wanted my bike NOW!!!

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I'll look into those links you posted.

Oh... I can't tell you how good it feels to commute to work on my new ride.

When I was younger and riding I was a little more.... ah.... foolish maybe?

Now that I have a family I ride with a little more caution.

Glad to be here in the forums.

Yeah BROTHER! Got mine at the Hopkins Hitching Post as well.

Funny story I have to share. I've been going in there for about 5 years with my little one... Every spring, summer, fall, and winter, to let him sit on the ATV's, Snowmobiles, Moto-Cross, and regular cycles.

Yeah, the old man liked to sit on a few and remember the glory days when he was young and dumb.

And every other weekend that we went in we'd see the same salesguy and he'd offer us a water or pop, sometimes a ballon or hot dog.

Well last weekend I figured it was time to live the dream and go for it.

They were awesome and I was fortunate enough to get the last FZ6 they had in stock.

It's so sweet.

I'll make sure to get some pic's up soon.

Thank you.

I think I made a great choice.

Now the only issue is, too mod or not to mod...

Thanks for the link. I'm going to check that out.

The great thing about my commute is, it's 10 miles each way and I can take winding backroads the whole time. The best part is the max speed limit is 45!

I figure it will be great for breaking in the engine and also gauging how much mileage I can squeeze out of my FZ.
