FZ6If you’re looking for one bike to perform a multitude of missions, look no further.
Take it from Cycle World* Magazine - “For a more advanced rider looking for a bike to do it all, there is no other choice.”
I've read ALL the threads on the subject and wanted to share the solution in which I have come up with. I havent slapped down the BIG $$ for this package yet....so I welcome any recommendations (especially if you know of cheaper all-around solutions).
Goal: Have GPS voice commands, MP3 audio, Handsfree Cell Phone, and Intercom with pillion all sent to bluetooth headsets. My phone will be bluetoothed to the GPS. The MP3 player is internal to the GPS. The headsets are bluetoothed to the GPS and to each other (rider/passenger). GPS mutes the audio with cell phone calls. GPS has TONS of features (i.e. XM and spoken street names) and comes with both motorcycle and car mounts.

Tom Tom Rider? Most of that comes with the unit and it is cheaper. www.tomtom.com for $599

I looked into the TomTom Rider (1)...but it falls short for me on several accounts. The TomTom Rider 2 has a bit more features...but still falls short:
1. Only works with the TomTom bluetooth headset (which does come in the box).
2. Only works with ONE headset (hence no intercom).
3. Does not have standard mic and audio jacks (hence no intercom and no chatterbox and no scalibility).
4. Does not have MP3 capability (no music at all).
5. Zumo has the theft proof motorcycle mount and car mount inclusive.
6. SD card on TomTom is used for maps and application. SD card slot is open for whatever on the Zumo (i.e. MP3 files)--maps and ap is internal memory.
7. Zumo speaks STREET NAMES. Not just, "Turn left in 50 ft"...but "Turn left in 50 ft onto Main Street."
8. Zumo even has a picture viewer so I can load up pictures of my kids (and my smoking hot wife) to show the guys.
If you want a GPS with bluetooth headset, bluetooth cell phone, no music, no XM, for only one person...then you are okay with the TomTom. If you want MP3, with multiple headsets (of your choosing wired/wireless), and a ton of other features...then go with the ZUMO.

BTW...Here is the response from TomTom support:
----------------------------------------------------
Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support in regard to your TomTom RIDER inquiries. We are more than glad to assist!
In regard to your 1st inquiry, the RIDER will support only one headset so I'm afraid you wont be able to connect a second one.
To answer your 2nd question about the INTERCOM capabilities of the RIDER, I regret to inform you that option is not present on this unit, and unfortunately the RIDER's bluetooth is the only device compatible with the unit itself. We really apologize for any inconvenience this might cause to you, and appreciate your comprehension.
If you have any further questions or comments, please e-mail or call us at 1-866-486-6866 Monday through Saturday, 8:30am to 7pm EST. Thanks again for writing. At TomTom we believe in showing you the way, the easy way.

By "coming with it" I was referring to the Bluetooth items where Garmin you would need to buy accessories separately. I'm not sure any company makes a device that is all you are asking for, although it would be great! Does the Zumo really do everything you've asked for?
If you have a second headset, is that for a pillion or someone driving another bike? My wife drives her own bike so I have to question if a second wireless headset would be effective if we were riding together.
Thanks for the links and effort researching the better product!

fz6innh,
The Scala Rider "Team Set" comes with TWO bluetooth headsets with a ton of features (see the previous URL). It could be used for pillion or seperate bike (but more so designed for pillion...limited only by bluetooth distances....not an actual FM radio). I wanted it to talk to my wife.
The only bluetooth item the TomTom Rider comes with is the SINGLE bluetooth headset. It is a good headset (actually a Scala as well--worth about $90). But it is the ONLY headset you can use with the TomTom...and you can not add a second headset....and you can not add a wired connection to a intercom system (i.e. scatterbox)...and you can not add a MP3 or radio or XM or anything else. So...it is not scalable at all. Solid unit...but does not meet MY requirements (sorry if that sounds narrow-minded).
Most of my friends know me as the GoogleMaster. I'm actually a network security engineer and I put my computer skills to the test when researching products. I really put at least 30 online hours into researching this solution. Even though I had hoped to spend about $400 less....I truly believe you CAN NOT find a better all-around solution (for both my new motorcycle or my xTerra). Of course everyone has their own requirements....
After a thorough review and several emails to several manufacturers....I know that the combination of the Zumo 550 (with built-in MP3 and XM and motorcycle mount and car mount w/speaker, etc), a bluetooth cell, and the Scala Rider Bluetooth Team Set, will provide all that I need and then some.
I went ahead and purchased these two products today per the URLs I provided.
Now it definately does not compare to the setup you are getting but didn't cost nearly as much. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is the intercom but I suppose voice dialing could work. I can do mp3, sirius, xm, navigation, google maps, windows live, take and display photos, I can even watch live tv (not good while riding). This is certainly not a permenant setup but works in a pinch. Ideally I will get a dedicated GPS system but don't have the money for one now. Please let us know how everything works out it looks like a really nice setup that you proposed.

The price of the communication system makes me believe that it is not a crystal clear system. You really do get what you pay for and I believe if you want to go for quality, you should go for the Baehr systems. I have it for bike to bike with my husband and it is crystal clear.

I've had countless TDY's, 11 PCS moves in 18 years, and am on my 3rd wife. Cant say that it has been a smooth ride....but I am damn proud to serve my country.
Just got back from my military TDY and had my new ZUMO 550 and SCALA Rider Team Set bluetooth headset (and GIVI topcase and Yamaha tall windshield) waiting for me. Using the supplied mount, I had the ZUMO mounted in maybe 5 minutes. Still need to run the power to the battery. I also mounted the SCALA bluetooth headsets on my helmets and tested out the config (GPS + Phone + MP3 + Intercom)....it works AWESOME (in my living room). My ZUMO, phone and new headsets quickly "paired up" and worked perfectly together. I can play an MP3 (loaded to the ZUMO) and hit the intercom button on the primary headset to pipe it over to the passenger simultaneously. When a call comes in, I can either hit a button on the ZUMO to accept/decline or setup my phone to AUTOANSWER. At which point, the MP3 is muted and the cell call comes through loud and clear to both rider and passenger (being that I already hit the intercom button). It works perfectly (in my living room). If you purchase the optional XM antenna (and service) it also has a built in XM tuner. Very sweet GPS!!!
Will take pictures tomorrow after I get it all done and give a thorough review after I use it on my commute to work (100 miles RT).
BTW...I highly recommend the vendors I URL'd above for these products. Their service/shipping was AWESOME!
Hmm. Anyone try mounting a GPS off of a mirror stalk?
1. If I may ask....Why?
2. I guess it could work...but the RAM-MOUNT is circular and would most likely dig into (dent) the mirror stalk if properly tightened. If not properly tightened, it would swivel in the wind.
3. I like where I put it...very convienent while driving...easy hand movement to the right...if you know what I mean.
