Default My turn to go down today...

So heres what happened. Pulling into the wal mart parking lot, backpack on and appropriate cold weather gear. While making a left down one of the lanes, I hit some sand and the back tire went out from under me, while falling, my gloves (extra grippy), grabbed a handful of throttle and spun the tire some more, it caught suddenly and threw me over in a high side, the bike landing on its right side really hard. Weird thing is I saw it all happen right as it was about to happen... I was probably going 15 mph. So the bike is on its side, revving like crazy since it jammed the throttle tube wide open, so I got up quickly and hit the kill switch. Guy runs up and wanted to call an ambulance, I had to convince him otherwise. Then he said we should probably get the bike up so a cop doesnt come over and write me a ticket (can they do that? Would they do that after seeing me hurt and my bike smashed? I think not)

My knees were shaking like a mofo, but I managed to pick the bike up and get it on its stand. Quick visual inspection found the frame slider did its job all right, bending in the process and grinding to about 3/4 its original length but still holding. Frame, cases, everything all right.I was able to ride it home after removing some of the busted plastics and bending the brake lever back ino place, but it felt a little funny with the handlebar bent. Tank is smashed, still holds gas, but I'm not concerned because I have a spare. Handlebar was bent, front end trashed pretty much, including:

Right mirror, not busted but ripped up pretty bad.
Front fairing piece, the big one.
Inner right front fairing piece
Headlight assembly is busted
Windscreen is busted
Fairing stay is bent in a few places

Things I will not have to replace:
Colored plastic piece on the right of the front fairing
Turn signals are scratched up but ok
Controls are all fine, minus a few scratches.
Pegs withstood the impact all right, and I'm not worried about the brake lever.

So do you guys think it'll be more economical to go naked or to replace all the busted/bent parts? I really like the looks of the naked one as well. I'll take pics of the damage for you guys tomorrow.

And I still didnt get to pick up my milk, snacks, and socks I went out for...

KillerNoodle,

I am so sorry about your misfortune... but thanks for sharing the story. After a highside, you sound to be in really good spirits. Yesterday I skidded a little on the road salt still out and decided to head for the barn because of it.

Only you can decided what to do with it. I think naked is hot... but it will be more money than you think (probably). Good luck.

Hey Killer, sorry for the misfortune! I'm glad to here that you're alright.

I don't know what these sort of posts do for anyone else, but everytime I see one, it makes me more cautious! I'm sure that doesn't make you feel much better, but I will be watching even more closely for the sand and salt that is everywhere.

I think you should investigate which is cheaper, fixing it or going naked. I went down the other day too...front tire hit a bit a sand when I was on the front brake and it dove out from under me. My frame slider broke off! The bolt holding it on snapped! A lot of good it did! My whole right side is scratched up...Shit happens I guess. Now Im gonna get some higher grade bolts to fasten the f*ckers better!

glad to hear no injury to you! It has been 3 weeks since my collision. I had gone down hard after getting bumped in an intersection. My left small finger got smashed. Sounds simple but after 5 screws and a pin to put it back together I am still on painkillers. Now it's infected to boot. My Fz1 took a beating and is being somewhat being put back together at a local dealer. Dealers, doctors, I Know they are to be avoided if possible but " it happens".. good luck

Sorry to hear you went down but it happens to all of us. It least you're not hurt and hopefully none of the high-caliber walmart hotties saw it.

You didn't get hurt and that's all that matters, wether you go naked or replace the fairings is all up to you. It could have been a lote worse.

Pics.

Danm, sorry to hear about your mishap. Glad you are ok which is most important. Seems like the bike came out pretty well considering. Naked or not... hmmm I prefer the faired version, but tis only my opinion. Check out how much it will cost, and then go from there.

Good luck, stay safe.

I'm glad you're OK. The bike you'll get it fix in no time for the season. Naked or not the bike is easier to repair than any body part. Good spirit.

+1 What Streetfighter said. Any crash you can walk or ride away from is better than the other kind.

If it were me, I'd first of all decide which look I prefer, and next look at parts, costs of those parts and the time it would take you to get it back on the road going w. fairing or naked look.

Mind telling us which frame sliders you were using? Did the slider bolts strip out or bend in the frame at all?
